XC70 Clutch Seals Problem

Hi

I've got a manual diesel Volvo XC70 on a 55 plate (lovely car).

I had to to up the brake fluid a couple of times.
I did not realise how serious this is.
I also didn't know that the brake and the clutch system are linked.

I'm currently on holiday in Cornwall and I had every intention in
getting the brake fluid leak fixed when we get home next week.

Yesterday my clutch pedal didn't work, so I called the RAC (as you do).

My car is currently at a local(ish) RAC approved garage.
It turns out that the seals have gone on the clutch.

Apparently; there's a lot of work involved in getting to the seals, because
of the design of the car and I've been given a ballpark quote/estimate of
£850-£1,000 to get it fixed. They will be phoning me later on today with
the full price.

I'm not a mechanic and I'm not going to pretend that I know my way
around my engine, because I don't.

I would like to know what's involved in making these repairs and if the
estimate the garage has given me sounds about right, because I don't
want to get ripped off.

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Hi it sounds like the clutch slave cylinder has gone.
its a 5/6 hour job as the gear box has to come out,
i have just had mine done clutch and slave cost £650.
depending on your mileage it may just need a slave or clutch and slave or clutch ,slave and Dmf.
if it needs a Dmf as well you will be talking another £380 on top.
you will not no whats wrong until the gearbox is out. when they ring you ask them what they are changing and doing and if you must go to the garagew first

Have them look at the clutch disk, pressure plate, flywheel, pilot bearing, throw out bearing and rear main seal while the transmission is out. Depending on miles, usage, other wear components may be near end of life. The labor to look and replace now may save the expense of a gearbox removal in the near future.

It has a concentric slave cylinder inside the gearbox bell housing which replaces the old type clutch release bearing. Mine leaked on my xc90 and needed the complete clutch including the duel mass flywheel, been 4 wheel drive a little more labour than yours. £1745. Dave
