ETMs (Electronic Throttle Modules) v70

Hi, can anyone offer some advice please regarding the curent issue on ETMs on 1999 - 2002 V70's?

"On V70s from 1999-2002 the manufacturer has predicted that 94% of the ETMs (Electronic Throttle Modules) will fail within 100000 miles, with many failing as early as 50000 miles. This is a £700 repair job, and the replacement part is apparently of the same design as the original."

Mine looks to have gone on my V70 T5 2001 Y reg, Volvo are offering me 20% off the cost to fit a new one but looking into this on the web in the US Volvo are paying the total amount! :angry2:

Thanks

Hi

There are two stickies under the 60 Series forum regarding ETM failures which might help you.

On the USA versus UK thing this is because of the US 'Lemon Laws' which basically means you can get severe recompense or a new vehicle (any US member will be able to correct me here) should it be not fit for purpose. Something like the Volvo ETM failing (or for Saab it was their DI Cassettes) and they run scared in the US and change them all for free often with a recall.

Here in the UK we put up and shut up as usual. Whilst I do not want the US blame culture sue the ass of someone because their coffee was too hot syndrome here, we could learn a lot from the lemon law.

Hello Newby,

Sorry to hear about your ETM. Have a look at this post:

There are a few others, but this one is the most uptodate.

The warranty extension in the US came about from an issue of increased air polution, with the Californian Air Pollution Control Authority (something like that anyway) negotiating the 200k 10 year extension. It's not a lemon law thing, but having said that the National Highways Agency is doing a full investigation into the matter which could lead to further benefits for US owners.

Our equivalent in the UK is VOSA. They've consulted with Volvo on the issue and have accepted a simpe software upgrade as a solution. It is not. The part physically wears out at the rate you report above.

Another very informative site is Vexedvolvo. You'll find links in the above thread or just Google it.

Have a read - it is long - and join the list of miffed owners.
