Eight Tips for a Positive Flying Experience

* tell the airline at least 48 hours before you travel that you need assistance

* be realistic about your needs & do some research before you go e.g. how big are the airports to/from - will you need assistance at both ends?

* check the length of the flight- then if necessary check there will be an onboard wheelchair so you can get to the toilet.

* stand your ground at check in- you should be able to take your wheelchair to the aircraft door, unless it's particularly heavy or complicated.

* be in control of the support you need- e.g. ask to be left in a cafe perhaps rather than a waiting area away from services.

* if travelling with a complex wheelchair or scooter- protect & label it e.g. the battery isolation switch, baggage handlers are paid to work at speed not with care, consider bubble wrap.

* wherever you arrive at the airport, car park, drop off point etc. there should be a call point, so rather than struggle, get assistance to come to you.

* if something goes wrong, let people know, initially explain to the airline and/or airport and if your not happy tell the civil aviation authority.

If you need oxygen tell the airline that way they will provide extra and all the aircrafts emergency portable 02 bottles dont get used ....and i wont have to replace them all during a 40 minute turn round ...
