1600 or 2000 diesel?
 

Evening all.

Im on the hunt for an S40 or V50 at the moment.
Looked at a few and looking at a few mor this weekend.
Roughly 2009 to 2011 in age and probably around the 100k mark.

Is there anything i should be looking for on either of these 2 engines? Anything to go for or anything to avoid?

At that mileage, you want to check the cam belt has been replaced. Ideally a stamp in the service book, or an Invoice or sticker in the engine bay.

Pre 2010, you had to replace the DPF and get an EOLYS fluid top up at 75,000 miles (the DPF was a serviceable item). The EOLYS fluid helps the DPF to regenerate.

After 2010. these cars were badged "D2". The DPF didn't require replacement like the earlier models did and there was no EOLYS fluid.

Both the 1.6 and 2.0 diesel are PSA engines, a development between Ford and Peugeot (they aren't true Volvo engines). Not that the PSA is a bad engine, they just need maintaining... buy one with decent service records.

The auto's are Powershift... they're not a particularly great transmission. Ideally you want to see some evidence of transmission servicing and if it hasn't, then you need to get the fluid and filter replaced and continue to do so if you want it to last. A manual is a safer bet really, but maybe you want an auto...

You say badged D2. Is this literally a badge on the bootlid or is it part of the VIN number or something?

Will be buying a manual. Dont like autos (mostly the cost to repair if they go wrong).

in 2010 Volvo introduced a 2ltr version of the 5 cylinder D5 engine.
These are called the D3 & D4.

Personally i would go for these Volvo designed and built engines over anything PSA.
I've owned a V50 2.0d and a V50 D4 and the D4 engine was far better IMHO

As Japster mentioned above, the 5 cylinder engines are much better than the PSA ones. The 5 cylinder engines are true Volvo engines, whereas the PSA ones were developed in partnership with Peugeot.

Pre 2010, they were badged 1.6d and 2.0d... both of these are 4 cylinder engines, which require DPF replacement and EOLYS fluid every 75k.

After 2010, they changed from 1.6d and 2.0d to "D2"... its still a PSA engine, but it doesn't need DPF replacement or EOLYS fluid.

However, after 2010, they also introduced true Volvo 5 cylinder engines badged D3 and D4... those are better than the PSA ones.

If you can, go for a 5 cylinder one.
