Third Service Report - Tyres and Brakes
There have been many threads on the forum, expressing concern of brake wear, especially rears, and tyre wear as well. So a report on how our XC60 is doing after three years.
25,000 miles on the clock Front tyres: Inner edge down to 2mm, outer edge at 3mm Rear tyres: 5mm Front brakes: 15% worn Rear brakes: 30% worn It is mainly driven in 15 to 30 mile country 'B' road runs with at longer 300 mile plus runs about ever month. Perhaps the excessive wear problem that some experience is a driving style thing but I do tend to use the power that it has and although my wife does not drive as fast she doesn't bother slowing down for the corners. Luckily we have had no problems with it, it is still one of the best cars we have owned, and I still want a T8 new version :) |
I would suggest that's not bad wear rates, our car didn't tow until it had done about 26000 miles and the history is:
Original front tyres lasted c32,000 Next set lasted to 61,000 Current set have 3mm at 86,000 Original rear tyres lasted to 73,000 Rear pads lasted to 35,000 Second set lasted to 65,000 (changed a bit early since first set wrecked the discs) Front pads lasted to 68,000 I don't think that's bad for a heavy SUV that's used on both motorway and local roads and tows a 1750KG caravan. Hmm I think 2018 might be an expensive year, rear brakes, cambelt.... |
I got 42,000 miles out of the rear pads, Fronts were still going stong when I sold it.

36k service last week (22months old)
Rear Discs and Pads changed Front Pads told there's 6k left on them Both rear tyres were 5mm tread, but had gone out of shape (flat spots) on both inner edges. |

Not a heavy breaker and no idea how you flat spot two tyres on the inside edge only without a handbrake. Never bump up curbs.
Volvo suggested a four wheel alignment, ATS said it wasn't needed. |
My rear pads were at 25% on the 36k service so replaced then. With the exception of wiper blades - the only part that is not from the factory.
I rotate my tyres occasionally, just had new rears, front at 4.0mm and they are the original Continental's - the car has done 45k (obviously they have been on the rear more than the front). I think that tyre wear is amazing - but they are well past their best and I'm driving it like I stole it to try and scrub them off so I get new fronts around mid November (it's a lease car). My recollection is that most XC owners with 17/18 inch wheels get good tyre wear (assuming correct alignment and suspension ok). 19" and above seem to suffer. |
Just changed my rear pads and discs at 67k. Discs were well worn and would not have lasted another 67k and the car may well be gone by then. All original Volvo parts.
Fronts are about 50% worn. |
