Where is my horn?
 

On the XC-60? Had a quick look today, but couldn’t find it. I want to leave it in place, but run the positive lead through a relay to the quad train horn compressor that I’ll be tucking away under there. But want to be able to quickly swap back for MOT etc.

I fitted these to an mx5 years ago, they were very loud compared to the stock. Also as they didnt need a compressor they were a direct replacement using the same wires (just needed an earth IIRC which was a wire looped to the bolt).

So loud i beeped once and a yoof nearly fell off his bike, and he was on the pavement, on the other side of the road, with a big grass verge between.

So I found the horns. Two horns, one either side of the front grille just inboard of the headlights. Remove the headlights and you can see one each just tucked behind the grille with a single 10mm bolt each.

I settled on a single, low-tone horn trumpet that is around 450mm long. I’ve tried it from a 12v battery and it’s just the right sound that I’m after. Sounds like a large lorry really.

The only space in the engine bay large enough is the cross member just behind the radiator, immediately below the fans. This is nice and dry/protected. I can use one existing hole in the cross member and will need to drill one the same diameter. The compressor will fit on the same cross member, but just past the radiator hose. This will allow the shortest air-tube length of 200-250mm or so.

The new compressor has a new relay and inline fuse, so I’ll connect to the battery +ve and to ground, with the relay switch connected to one of the horn harnesses (I’ll disconnect both).

Will post pics when I’m done if anyone fancies giving it a go.
