1998 V70 R AWD Transfer Box

I seem to have exhausted all avenue's until now, in my search for a replacement angle gear for my car, which I have owned for 16 wonderful years.
Volvo in their wisdom, have withdrawn this part from manufacture, leaving me, and other owners uncertain of their cars future.
My angle gear is showing signs of failure, and I am desperate to locate either a new or secondhand unit, or, someone who has the expertise to rebuild it.
So, if you have any information or ideas, i would appreciate it. Part number is 8602678
Thank you in anticipation

I realize that this thread is a few months old now but if you haven't found a working used angle gear yet, you can rebuild your old one. All of the bearings and races are available and were made by SKF. The seals are all available, the crush collar should also still be available. Unless the actual gears have damage, you should be able to rebuild it. Make sure to get a new sleeve that goes between the gearbox and angle gear as well of course.

There's a guy making a re-engineered sleeve out there with slightly harder material so that it doesn't fail. So far people seem to be having success with it. You can look that up over on Swedespeed as his company name escapes me at the moment.

This thread should have all the info you need for parts for the angle gear:

Hope that helps!

That's a coincidence, just purchased a used transfer box today for £150. All,I now need is a company with the expertise to rebuild it for me. Any suggestions most welcome.

Any success David?

I believe CJ Yother offers a rebuilding service on angle gears but he's located in California so that's probably a big shipping hassle. There is a company in Sweden as well that rebuilds newer angle gears but probably they can also do this for the old ones...

www.maskinobil.com

The website is in Swedish but you can email them or call them and I'm pretty sure someone will be able to speak with you in English. It looks like they offer a rebuild for the angle gears of P80 cars for 4500 SEK (~475 Euro).

Looks as though this one has been lying around for a while imo.

I'm surprised you cant find a good one after all this time when you consider how much of these motors have been broken.

Transfer box

It gives me great pleasure to announce the conclusion of my quest to obtain a replacement Transfer box for my beloved V70 R AWD. Managed to buy a secondhand unit off eBay, condition unknown, found a local gearbox specialist who was able to strip the unit, and rebuild with new seals and bearings, and now awaiting it to be fitted. Once the old one is removed, I will have that rebuilt, and kept as a spare. Happy days.
