Volvo p1800E with twin SU's exhaust question

1 Attachment(s)
I have a question about the exhaust fitted to my 1800E which is running twin SU's - when I bought the car I noticed a bodge on the exhaust (pic enc) that I want to clean up (i.e get one piece exhaust pipe to replace) from what I can tell I only have two silencers and this straight through pipe to back just before axle !!
Is this correct ? do you think they did it to give it more air flow ? as mentioned the car is a b20 engine running twin Su's Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

There should be a silencer where your straight piece of pipe is.

The complete system comprises of three silencers, one where the manifold downpipe levels out, one just ahead of the rear axle and one under the boot floor which exits with the twin curved chrome tailpipes.

The one you are missing sits quite low and is easy to scrape on speed humps etc, it may have been removed to overcome this?

Thanks Paul I did wonder - maybe they took it off to help the engine breath more, however I suspect they just did the easiest fix ! :-( for them and take It out - I was wondering for performance what's best for the twin SU's it's now running ?
Do I put a new Injections exhaust system on or leave this one ?
Thanks All

A silencer is a silencer but if you are happy with the increased "noise"/sporty sound, you can leave it as it is. If the system as is, has a nasty resonance at speeds that you cruise at, then refitting the original silencer might be a good plan. There might be a smaller silencer that will fit in place of the bulky Volvo one. Other owners might be able to advise.
