Blower motor - Need Advice
 

We were taking the mother-in-law to the centre for her second Covid jab and I noticed that there wasn't much output coming from the vents to keep the car warm.

The blower runs, but sounds like a bag of bolts (as if a bearing is full of grit), and is erratic at any setting and is nowhere near it's normal output. Doing a search on the forum just leads to more confusion with mentions of resistor packs, sensors etc. I see it's a fairly easy job to remove the blower (no need to pull out the dash as first thought), but before I jump on the net and search for a replacement (which no doubt will be mind boggling as no doubt there will be several different types depending on the spec of the car) I wanted to get some advice from you lot... Am I right in thinking it's more likely to be the fan rather than any resistor pack as from what I can gather a failed pack results in the blower running full pelt or not at all ?

The car is a S plate, 1999 V70 2.5 petrol non- turbo with climate control (AC is fitted) - Fan speed is controlled by a slider, auto to the left and slow to fast as it's moved right.

If anyone can suggest a suitable replacement it would be appreciated. - Typical how these pack up on the first real cold snap of this winter !

LOL I thought you might have one.... shame it didn't pack up 10 days ago... I could have saved myself some postage !

I'll let you know if I get stuck... I'll see if I can get a look at it just in case it needs some lubrication for now....

Check the squirrel cage, debris can unbalance it and make it squeal like a banshee. Bearings will do the same. They can be lubricated by removing the blower motor (and removing the cage to access them better!)

Thanks... I'll wait for it to warm up a bit before I go pulling the car apart, but will take a look to see if there is anything obvious, give it a clean and lubricate it with some lithium grease and see if it runs any better.. If not then Steve may well be getting a PM :)

It's not a big job - just make sure that the blower motor part number (easily seen without needing to dismantle) matches as I believe that there are differences.

I've changed blower motors several times on my old V70 and on our current S70.

One time I did it one-handed with my left arm in plaster after an elbow operation, so honestly, it isn't a bid deal!

Be careful if your car has a passenger dash airbag - you'll need to take all the usual airbag precautions.

Thanks for the encouragement Jack. There is no passenger airbag, so that's one less thing to deal with... I've watched a few videos, and looked at the Haynes manual, and have removed the glove box years back when I replaced the heater matrix... so have an idea what's involved.

Just at the moment need it to warm up a tad as it hasn't gotten above freezing today and without a garage I feel the cold !!

It's much easier than replacing the matrix - and no hoses to disconnect or spills to mop up!
