Gearbox filler plug
Anyone got any tips for removing the square plug on my 164 gearbox? I just want to check the level and top up if necessary.
It seems to be about 11.5m across, so a 12mm open ended spanner is no good and mole grips are just rounding the corners off. It is a 1973 164 with the four speed plus overdrive box - which might be called an M45. Perhaps there is a special Volvo tool? Or do I just need to persevere with mole grips and swearing? thanks Martin |
af spanner
you have af nuts and bolts, not metric.

I use a large, good quality adjustable spanner - adjusted to be a very tight fit - and a hammer to tap it loose.

Hi Martin, You need a tool where the jaws tighten as you apply pressure not loosen as an adjustable will. Such as a stillson or pipe wrench. Trouble is you might bugger up the head and will need to replace it!.
