Mine needs a code, which I don't have, can I get one?
Also what upgrades can you go with, without it looking too out of place?
The kids will be moaning they can't link up their ipods or phones to it.

Have you tried popping the radio out and looking on the case? I have two SC901s and both have the code written on them!

Easy to get the radio out, no tools needed, just pop out the pullers on each side by pressing them in gently.

Codes are sometimes written by previous owners on the head unit casing, so it's worth pulling the unit out to check. Otherwise it's either a dealer (assuming the radio is original to the car - you'll need the VIN) or one of the many decoding services advertised in various places.

Upgrades? Well it depends on what you have and what you want. If you have a CD, tape and radio then you have just about everything that was available, except the CD multi-changer (boot mounted unit) or the 3-disc version of the dash-mounted offering.

It is possible to hard-wire an aux lead if you're handy with a soldering iron, or you can buy plug-in aux adaptors on Ebay.

In our 97 S90 and our 98 S70 I've simply added the Kitsound FM transmitter units that connect to a Bluetooth phone. These are OK, but not 100% brilliant. We got ours from Halfords they plug into the lighter socket and are very easy to use. They also have a hands-free phone function.

I've looked at more modern audio units, but it seems that anything in the £100 - £300 bracket is utter rubbish, and is hopelessly out-performed by the original Volvo-branded Alpine units. The OEM kit is probably amongst the best car audio ever.

Have a read of the first "sticky" in this section.

If you have the original book pack look in the wallet as they originally had a card (credit card size) with the radio code printed on.

Why Yes, yes i have.
Unfortunately it is not the original radio for the car. The code I have in the paperwork does not work on the installed radio.
So it looks like my options are.... Purchase a genuine one with the code. Or purchase an after market one..

Or use a decoding service, as mentioned by Capt Jack in the second reply.

Any dealer can get the code for you , just hand them the radio and they will look it up , just tell them it is not the original factory coded one .

I took captain Jack's/ luxobarge advice as my first option by taking it out and going throu all the paperwork
I will nip the unit to the main stealers next weekend, there was talk of needing the cars vin number that put me off doing that as it is not the original unit. I looked at a few decoding services and charges range quite dramatically. Is it worth spending £20 just to see if it actually works? Hopefully the main dealers may help me for mates rates as I have done them a few favors in the past.
But that will get me going for now, I definately think an upgrade is the way forward with all this plug your phone in and Spotify etc. I think most of my cds are in the loft now

They do not need the VIN just the Radio model number , serial number and part number from your radio . Alll from the unit it'self ...

The VIN works if it still has the original radio but the above method gets the code from the central volvo radio database for everything ..
