Steering lock and new MOT Rules
Hi All, I have a 1989 340 GL 1.4 and the steering lock has never worked. No problem up to now, but I believe that the new MOT rules will require it to work.
I have a complete spare column/ lock from a 1987 340 GLE 1.7. What is the easiest procedure to end up with a working lock on the car? Will drilling of the lock bolts be necessary etc. etc? Thanks |
We've recently had this dicussion on V3M, the post by MacPlaxton is worth a read, though I havn't read the paragraph in the manual myself I'd trust what MP says :)
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-u...157717#p157717 There is also a guide somewhere on V3M about how to dislodge stuck steering locks, I believe our register keeper James wrote it. |

The Haynes Workshop Manual says to drill the lock bolts out. |

"MOT Manual wrote:The inspection of the steering lock only applies to passenger cars with: • a steering lock fitted as standard by the manufacturer, and • four or more wheels, and • not more than 8 passenger seats excluding the driver’s seat, and • first used on or after 1 September 2001 The check does not apply to quadricycles." So presumably all 340's are exempt. |
The "fix" I had was just to push the barrel in with your finger/thumb, which usually makes it go "clunk", and engage the lock.

It usually works. You might need to jiggle it a bit. The give-away is whether or not the 'tab' just inside the slot has popped out or not. If it has closed over the hole, the wheel lock won't engage. Once it has clicked 'out', the lock should engage.
Long-term, I suspect that lubricating it will fix the problem. I was recently told off for advising someone to use WD40 for lubricating locks - you need to use a solvent/graphite type lube for locks, else it just attracts dirty by being sticky! cheers James |
