Stereo installation - above the air vents
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what I need to make the fitting of a stereo unit in the dash above the air vents work please. My original radio was fitted down by the shifter, not much use if you want to put a CD player in! Thanks K. |
And the model is and why not put it where the normal radio goes. Regards Peter

I fiited a CD player in the lower mount - it fits.
You have a few choices: 1) Pray that the company that makes facia adapters suddenly starts making the 240 upper dash adapter again 2) Find one at a scrapyard or on ebay - neither is particularly likely 3) Fit in the lower mount and angle your CDs when you put them in - shouldnt be a problem - I did 4) Fabricate a mount for the upper dash using plastic and metal - possible - but hard work If you are interested I am about to put a full set up on ebay - which will include 2 amps, a 12" sub, a pair of 4" speakers, a Nakamichi head unit + all the cables. I also have a roofrack and loadcover for a 240. |
Thanks for the replies.
DodgyKen, I didn't realise that a CD would fit, thanks for that, it opens up the options. Your kit for sale looks interesting, but I'm on a strict budget, my wife wants a new car so mine has to wait........ |
It can be fitted in the top
It is possible to remove the volvo radio and enlarge the slot to take a standard din mount, from memory there is a central fixing at the back which will also support the new radio.
It is a bit fiddly, I did one about 3 years ago and it has not fallen out yet. |
Upper/lower mounts
I thought the lower mount was DIN D and the upper DIN E, and it's possible to get an adaptor to mount a DIN D unit in a DIN E slot, but not vice versa, so it depends what you want to put in (or was it the other way round)?

The upper mount radio (Volvo standard) had the custom front (with the curve on one side) and does indeed have a bolt coming in from a bracket at the back.
The biggest problem is that a lot of the parts you need to mount a radio in both locations are no longer available from Autoleads (I think that is their name - they produce the facia adapters for a lot of cars) and also Volvo. I had to fabricate mine in the lower mount anyway using an old Volvo lower mount radio facia - it still looked good. The added benefit of a lower mount is that it is tucked away and nobody can really see it from outside. The 240 Estate is also a great audio car - plenty of space under the boot floor for the mounting of a couple of amps and with a load cover the sub is not visible. The rest of the kit will go on ebay in the next week or so - and I will post you a link. |
Here's an adaptor - not sure what it adapts exactly, looks like the lower slot.

Adaptors for lower mounting and upper mounting (unfortunately only lhd) have been on ebay recently. It is possible to cut the tray about to hold a CD player - I have done it.

radio fascia
As a word of warning, I have (foolishly) sent cheques off to two people from this site who offered me the very scarce upper radio fascia/mount over the last few months. Neither has sent me anything, both have cashed my cheques. None of the guys above I hasten to add!!!
