2003 S40 - coolant squirting out of block (vid)

yes, it sounds dramatic, doesn't it?*

So here's our 2003 S40/V40 2.0L gas engine (180.000 km) with coolant squirting out of the block in a rather spectacular fashion...

context information: engine (and car) runs fine for the milage (occasional CEL on-and-off - but passes smog test without problems), timing chain/belt replaced at 130.000km

... since a video says more than a 1000 words ...

I assume that type of "port" is either heater, waterpump or thermostat related ...

what am I looking at ... I am kind of bummed as I hoped for a cheap hose replacement ...*

so what is it? ... can this be remedied from the outside (pulling and replacing the port?) ... or are we looking at some mayor repair (e.g. pulling and opening the engine)

A huge thanks for all that can help me somewhat with this problem. I am located in LatAm and Volvos are few and far between and the dealer wears an eyepatch, a hook and a wooden leg, if you get my drift ;-) ...*

cheers, Al

I'm no expert and not familiar with these engines Al, but if it was heater, water pump or thermostat related as you suggest, wouldn't there also be a corresponding detached hose? I wonder if you might have blown a core plug, used in the manufacture of the block. If so, it is a relatively simple matter to clean up the orifice and carefully tap in a replacement plug of the correct diameter.

Regards, John.

That is known as a core plug , its corroded through due to you not using proper volvo coolant which stops corrosion , They are cheap from the dealer and easy to replace .
