Subwoofer in the trunk
Hi guys,
I own a 940 2.0 Turbo SW of 1997 and I wonder if anybody in this forum has ever tried to put a shallow mount subwoofer in the under-trunk. I want to install a subwoofer but I do not want to compromise with the loading space, so it has to go down there. So far, I saw that Pioneer manufactures a spare wheel subwoofer but I have no idea how it works and I am a bit suspicious because no other manufacturer really followed that path. Alternatively, shallow mount subs can be found, under 4", but I am not sure if the thickness of the hatch (half inch) is enough to keep that weight and/or prevent any vibration. That is why I am looking for somebody who has attempted this before me :) Thank you! Alex |
My 740 estate has a small pioneer subwoofer mounted in the spare wheel. Sounds great :)
My brother's 940 has a spare wheel well which is a different shape so you may not be able to have the wheel facing down like I can. |

https://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/ts-wx610a I have to verify if there is a way I can still fix the spare wheel even if it is flipped the other side. Alex I forgot another question, you can simply close the hatch without worrying to drill a hole in it for the bass to sound properly? |
I've got a TS-WX210A in mine, which I mounted to a board that fits in the spare wheel. As bass noises are directional, being under the hatch (and behind the rear seat and below the luggage cover) doesn't seem to have a significant influence on the sound quality. I often have a few bags in the boot and can't say I've noticed any difference.
I've also uprated my door speakers (same size as OE) which helps a bit too :) |

Given that the spare tire is not an option, I checked the two side storage spaces: https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/f6...k9ton1bi4g.jpg https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/d1...by374eyc4g.jpg https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/cc...lad8tupg4g.jpg https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/63...ms08ilma4g.jpg I think it could be a possibility, but I could not find a manufacturer of elliptical woofers, I think I have seen one some time ago but who knows whether it is good/bad stuff. Could you not make a fibreglass mould out of the bottom section then make a box up top? Then use a shallow mount 8 inch sub?
