Bosch alternator repair

Just for information: my Bosch alternator from my V70 TDi was down on the amount of charge it should be pushing out (12.4v underload, which is probably why the battery would flatten quickly, it never really charged up), plus the bearings were whining at about 1500+ rpm. I purchased a second hand replacement from e-bay (£30), which pushed out no charge and smoked badly. So I decided to have ago at repairing my original. It cost me £30 for a new regulator (aftermarket) and £10 for the 2 bearings; this is against the £200+ I was quoted for a reconditioned item. Getting the bearings off was a nightmare and I had to carefully cut them off. The link below is for a website which describes the whole process; it's not hard, infact the hardest bit was getting the alternator out of the car, as there isn't a lot of room and the aircon pipe really gets in the way (have a go and find out; but it will come out).

My alternator now keeps a steady 14V underload and there's no whining other than the kids in the 'rear facing seats'; so I'm happy. Regards, Jon

P.S. Thanks Mike (outnumbered) for shipping the regulator down South.

P.S.S. I got the bearings from these guys: http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.php
