Oil cooler pipes.
 

My 1996 940 B230FK is loosing 0.5 litres of coolant for the last 4 months in 150 miles of driving. 204,000 miles.

From max reading to just above the outlet on header tank pipe.

The rear hoses look ok, can't see any leaks. Turbo hoses, bottom, top hoses replaced 4 years ago with genuine Volvo and rad replaced with a Nissens one. Did have a bit of water on top of water pump, near top seal but now been dry for a while. If the below does not fix I'll replace pump with an SKF brand.

When I had an oil and filter change recently the oil cooler pipes were very oil contaminated and damp, so going to change them.

Has anyone the Volvo part numbers? Believe there are two pipes. Any write up of how to do the job?

Anyone have the Volvo coolant part number? Going to order the parts at Paul Rigby as saves postage costs.

Needs a bit of TLC.

I picked both these hoses up from main dealer last week. They are a stock item as they got them in the next day

Not exactly a write-up but a few pictures from when I did mine.

Obviously you need to do the job from under the car. You should not need to remove the engine tray. You will need to drain the coolant. One of the hoses attaches straight to a drain spigot. Or use the one on the end of the radiator. You will almost certainly need to remove the oil filter for better access. If you aren’t due an oil change this can be done with only minimal loss of oil. Probably best to use new jubilee clips. I seem to have used 15-24mm and usually try to source stainless steel ones. There isn’t a lot of room so you cannot get away with using oversized clips. Need to get a pair of axle stands to raise the front of the car.

Do you know how much the rear of engine heater hoses cost? May as well change those as well, then all hoses recent then.

I ordered 11-25mm stainless clips from Westfield fasteners for this. Delivery was super fast !

For OEM I’d expect around £20 each. I have had one of these fail, but I suspect as a result of minor damage sustained during a head gasket change. The originals are heat-proof and quite tough.

Assuming your car has a/c and hence the plastic heater control valve under the distributor then also budget £40 - £50 for a new one of these. The chances of being able to remove the existing hoses from it and tighten up new ones without breaking the brittle plastic are quite slim.
