"steering locked try again"

Go in the car this morning and it refused to start, said "STEERING LOCKED TRY AGAIN" on the dashboard.

Fiddled with the key and the steering wheel. (Took a taxi to where I needed to go and back.)

Later, having read up on various forums, I vigorously yanked the steering wheel from side to side whilst frobbing the key, and it started.

Reading between the lines, I suspect if you park it with some tension in the steering, somehow the power steering doesn't have enough oomph when you go to start it. I've measured the voltage across the battery, it's 11.4V but then again perhaps it's more a question of current.

Next step: new battery.

what is the voltage when the engine is running? Should be over 14 v , more likely to be the alternator than battery ...

However ! the fault is the steering lock motor , best change it now , otherwise you will get stranded somewhere and have to be towed to a volvo garage ...
