Vacuum pump whining long after I've switched off

Hi All,

A first for me: Just moved my car a couple of feet so I could put my bins out & there was quite a whine coming from the nearside front a long time after I'd switched the engine off - maybe a couple of mins.

At first I thought it was the headlight leveling motor (which I probably broke when cleaning the lens) but when I popped the bonnet there was no doubt what was making the noise. The brake vacuum pump was whining, vibrating & a little warm. I felt it, tapped it a bit, swore at it & turned back to get my tools from the house when it stopped.

I've left it for now. Is this normal behaviour ??

Cheers.

Paddy

No its not, the pump has probably worn itself out by now , it runs for a few seconds to build up vacuum in the brakes then stops , There could be an air leak or the brown control switch faulty in the brake servo hose .

I have a buzz/whine when ignition is on. I was fairly sure it was the servo in the electronic throttle body. But now you guys got me wondering if its vacuum pump. Is this part of the PCV system on the 2l petrol duratec, and if so where is it located in the engine bay?
