HELP: 2L petrol - silver pipe between the engine & firewall
guys, need urgent help.
today i have notice the silver pipe between the engine and the firewall came lose. it came off the tube at the rear of the engine. (its the one also connects to the side of the airbox and rear of the engine) i have no idea what this pipe call and its use. there is enough length left for me for "put" it back onto the tube loosely. the silver pipe is brittle due to the temp of the engine bay (i think) can someone please advise where i can get this part from and what would happen to the engine if it was left off for a short/long period of time. thanks in advance. :thumbs_up: |

If you mean the silver corrugated flexi pipe don't worry about it, the pipe is a pre heater pipe for the engine and really has no use in the uk, I have blanked it off as have some of the other forum members. The idea of the pipe is to draw warm air from the exhaust pipe into the air intake to warm the engine up quicker which may be fine if you live in sweden or some other country that suffers from freezing temperatures in winter but not here in britain.

Just had a look at me own engine and I think the part you refering to is the "hot air inlet duct from the manifold heat shield"
Maybe one of other members can help as to it's function and importance but I'm hazarding a guess that it's not a major issue at present, however don't quote me on that as I'm not sure. |

sorry, didnt take a picture yesterday and the car is parked a little distance away. i will take a pic next time when i get a chance. yes, its the silver corrugated flexi pipe connected between the exhaust pipe and the side (or near bottom) of the airbox. the pipehas became brittle and started to flake and break off at the exhaust end. i thought i had something to do with my "poorer" fuel economy of late. had a full service last week and it felt like the fuel economy has gone down abit. half a tank would usually last me about 200 miles on A roads and motorway. according to the info centre - my highest average MPG is 29.9....... |
As Stevo says, it's not really necessary save for really cold starts. If you wish to replace it bring a piece of the existing pipe to a good motor factor and they sholud be able to sell you a length of it to suit your car.
As regards your fuel economy...what parts did they replace? Did they use original Volvo parts? |
