The amount of assistance can be changed just by twisting a knob on a control box if fitted. I believe that there is a UK company that can do this conversion MUCH cheaper than the EZ one using pretty much the same parts. There are also instructions out there for DIY for even less money. No I don't have links. Search the bay for the control box and the electric steering column.

That applies if you are using an older EPS with a controller that accepts a pulse type VSS signal such as the Corsa EPS units. Since about 2005 it is more common to see EPS controllers (whether they are column or rack style EPS) using a speed signal provided over the vehicle CAN bus. That is a more complex thing to emulate than the simple adjustable pulse generators sold for the older EPS units.

Generating a speed signal using a tiny GPS unit and loading it on to a CAN bus network for use by the EPS is not so hard. Probably around $100. Sussing out the device address and memory location in the EPS controller for the vehicle speed variable is not so easy. As far as i can figure out, once you get past the physical and signaling layer of the CAN protocol the protocol becomes non standard.

On my 142, I wired out the CAN bus connection from the EPS controller and connected it to the Megasquirt 2 fuel injection controller which replaces the D jet on my car. The MS2 is CAN enabled; but, nothing is happening on the bus because I don't know the device and memory address for the EPS and I currently don't have a speed signal for the MS2 (that would be the easier part f the equation).

It has been the better part of two years since I purchased an EZ kit for my 123GT. At the time, I was given sales totals for different makes and models, and the Amazon was by far the most common recepient of EZ power steering. Why did I select the EZ unit over the various other kits out there? Because as an engineer I appreciated the thought that had gone into the packaging, the selection of componentry (e.g., the servo motor), and the driver-oriented features, such as the driver-selectable and speed-sensitive variable gain.

Can the EZ system stress the steering gearbox? Sure, if you're foolish enough to crank hard and fast while the vehicle is stationary. Just do as you did 50 years ago with your first Amazon, and don't overstress the vehicle.

So why did I buy power assisted steering at all? Because I have aged 54 years since I fell in love with driving my mother's brand-new 1967 Volvo 122S wagon, and knew that with various old age disabilities that I would find driving the GT difficult without some electrical assist.

No, it hasn't been installed yet; little details like finishing the 165hp engine build remain before we finish the steering and start on the interior. I am 100% confident, however, that I made the right choice when I selected EZ to make life easier in my old age.

I will post pictures of the GT, including shots of the restoration, when she is completed this coming Spring after a total of seven years. The car is spectacular, everything I dreamed of for over 50 years.

Exactly, 142. Any decent driver avoids spinning the wheel at a standstill.

For me, the PS has transformed the car. I have a lovely Nardi wheel and light steering at parking speeds and retained feel at speed. Sure, there's a cost to it, but again, no regrets for me there.

My car is quite modified in any case. "All in the best possible taste" !!!

For me these are the best type of mods that have a practical improvement for the owner.

I love the original steering wheels, I like the GT wheels but think the original standard steering wheels are one of the coolest parts of the interior and prefer them. I’d never change the steering wheel for a aftermarket one.

For me I think it would be a nice to have when parking, for normal driving I don’t find there is a need.

Look forward to seeing the pics of the restoration.

Have you any relatives in Dundee? Quite a well known Dundee company shares your name. My wife worked for them when they bought the Aberdeen newspapers.

Power Steering Nardi Wheel

One of the reasons I chose an 1800E was because I like the 1970's interior, but for me the steering wheel isn't stylish at all. The 120 series and 1800S steering wheels are really stylish.

Here's a pic of what I have now.Attachment 131426
