Spark plugs 1.4 GL 1989
 

Some time ago I bought a set of NGK ZGR5B Sparkplugs, online they were listed for the 340 1.4. I thought that I might fit them today, however in the Haynes manual they are not listed, and the various listed ones have different gap settings.

What gap do I use for the ZGRB5B?

The original B14 plugs are preset, the gaps look massive ( 0.8 to 0.9 mm ) and have extra extended noses .. No longer available from volvo , Just try the ones you were given and set the gaps to the above figure as long as they look physically the same size .
how many miles have yours done? I would be inclined to leave them , if they are running ok and original volvo plugs ...

Thanks for the response. The plugs in the car are non original, possibly done 60,000 Miles. Car is running well though.

oh well , best change those ! what MPG do you get by the way , Is the MOT happy with emissions ?

Not sure what MPG I get, but think it's pretty good, probably as per drivers handbook, my 1.7 even at around 200,000 Miles achieved stated consumption.

MOT emissions attached, although I am suspect of his CO reading, my own CO meter measured 1.7 %

His HC reading is about the same as last year, when his CO reading near enough coincided with mine.

The mot results will be correct as their machines have to be calibrated twice a year ..
your emissions are remarkably low , on par with a fuel injection engine or do you have the catalytic converter ?

I'm getting 40 mpg with journeys including some slow traffic or 45 mpg when out on a normal 50 - 70 mph drive . Incredible really as the older 1980 version was a struggle to get over 30 mpg , the later cars have some fuel saving details though and I have done a few things myself ..
the 1.7 was even better .

I am still suspect of the MOT station Co reading, around the same time I adjusted a couple of other cars using my meter, the MOT results coincided with mine. No, there is no cat on my car, except for the one in the attached pic!

Your 40 MPG can't be bad. After fixing the bad petrol pipes at the rear of my 1.7, I went on a long journey and genuinely thought that the fuel gauge had stuck, over 50 MPG.

Handbook consumption figures

The handbook supplied with the car states spark plug gap 0.55-0.65 mm.

I measured the new ZFR5B plugs as supplied, 0.64 mm, or in English! 0.025"

Mine preferred working on the bigger volvos :-)

the plug gaps changed when the very long nosed ones came out on the B14 4E handbooks were, and still are a bit inaccurate sometimes .. My figures came from the volvo green manual .

looking at the fuel consumption we all should have bought GLT's instead if B14's ...
