D5 185 Euro 4 re-mapping
 
Now I have my S60 D5 running perfectly I'm thinking of having it remapped.
Not a plug in tuning box but a proper rolling road remap.

Anyone had it done recently? What gains did you achieve and what sort of cost was it?

I have not, mates have with varying success, Engine Management Light on, etc.

I wouldn’t bother myself.

If Volvo could make their cars more powerful, more fuel efficient and maintain their reliability they would have done. Someone is not charging £400 quid for something BETTER. Faster yes, but it’s not better.

Volvo make the best car they can to conform to the confines of Euro regs. They then go even further with emissions reductions to get their cars into lower tax bands (to increase sales). If you remove these considerations (as you do with an aftermarket remap) you can make a more efficient better performing car.

That said, I'm with XC90mk1 - I wouldn't bother.

You say your D5 is now running perfectly. If it 'aint broke, and all that... :rolleyes:

I had a Shark remap on my Euro 3 163 over 50,000 miles ago and it has been faultless. Have a look at their website to see what gains to expect for an E4 185, and why a remap can be beneficial.

However, be prepared to pay a premium on your insurance ... and you'll find a lot of insurers won't be interested in insuring you anymore. I'm currently with Admiral, but Adrian Flux and other 'specialist' insurers will cover you.

I don't have to worry about insurance .... I drive around uninsured ... and I don't have a licence ..... I occasionally scrape down peoples cars in carparks and drive away ....

Of course I'm kidding!!

My Volvo is on my business fleet insurance as my private vehicle and as such I can just enter the modifications into the database with no additional premiums to pay.

I'll look into shark tuning ....

I've had a couple of diesel cars mapped at SP Tuning near Hinckley in Leicestershire: https://www.sptuning.co.uk/index.html

I've had no issues at all with these, including the cars going back to main dealers (1 VW & 1 Audi) for servicing and being hooked up to their computers with the remap obviously not being visible to them.

It really does work. The maps that manufacturers use are inevitably a compromise between emissions, performance, fuel grade etc. etc. If a more focused map is used then I have found improvements in both performance AND economy (no doubt at the expense of emissions and/or ability to run on low grade fuel).

Obviously there are boundaries, if the boost pressure and fuelling are turned up to '11' then it's not going to do the vehicle any good. But if you use a reputable company that knows what they're doing and keeps power increases to a sensible level then you shouldn't have any problems.
