460 1.9 turbo diesel poor performance

Please help

I have a 460 19Td have it about a month. I love the car, nice to drive
but very poor performance.

The rev counter will not go above 4000 rpm - 4800rpm. some days it is quicker than other. feels like there is no turbo boost or power.

The other day it would not go over 30mph.

I had a 75bhp TD VW vento before this car and it was quick, i thought the 460TD having 90bhp it would be far better performance.

Tonite i bought another 460TD for parts and this car goes like a rocket
compared the the 460TD i have.

Any help will be brillant

The Haynes Automotive Diesel Engines manual should help as it features the Renault diesel as well as several others.

All the best, Peter.

Hmm interesting.

I'm investigating something simular on my brothers 460TD.

It was a very lively and fast car even showing 96bhp on a recent rolling road session.

However since i pulled the engine and box out to change the clutch & cambelt the performance hasnt been what it used to be.

Before the car would whip round to the redline and allways give 0.9bar boost.

Now it falls short of the red line and only delivers 0.8bar

On my initial drive the car was very sluggish and then it got better after i removed the mat that was under the accelerator pedal.

I havent had much time to play with the car but my only initail thoughts were i've routed the throttle cable incorrectly or its gone out of adjustment.

As with the engine off and ya foot pressed to the floor, you can still turn the throttle arm on the injector pump quite a bit further.

Seeing as you have two cars and can do some comparisons can you see if you can turn the throttle arm much further when the pedal is fully depressed on your quick car and then on the car thats not so quick.

So far thats all i can think off thats wrong, diesels arent my speciality.

I've ruled out diesel pump timing cos i've changed the cambelt on this engine many times and with the engine out, it was even easier to do and ensure it was right.

Thanks for your reply

I have already done this.

Pushed the arm on the pump to full open and it made no differents.

Out driving to day in the car, had the foot to the floor on the motorway and max speed was 65-70 mph. The rev counter did not go above 3000 rpm.

Parked the car for 10 minutes doing a message, got back in the car and back down the motorway and the car was doing 70mph in third gear, rev counter maxed out to 4.5 - 5.0.

Already change fuel filter and air filter.

Tomorrow the car could be fine or it will only rev to about 3 again.

Even when it is going better, it is still not going aswell as the other car i have

Thanks

Have you checked for air getting into the fuel lead between filter and pump? I had a case of a 944 Turbidiesel with an almost completely closed off kinked fuel line between filter and pump. The power was so low it took three goes to breast the little hill to my place.!!

All the best, Peter.

Thanks Peter

That is my next thing to check.

A friend had suggested that aswell, I am going to take the pipes off and check for this.

He also suggested that it could be further down the line towards the fuel tank.

Someone else had also suggested that the Cat Convertor could be blocked and the exhaust gases are not getting away quick enoungh, (bit like an exhaust brake on a lorry) but i am not sure if this car has a cat convertor - Does it?

Thanks

Does the 1994 460 19TD have an engine management system/chip???

no its an old technology diesel - no ecu (apart from glow plug box)

Have you checked the pipe that tells the pump that the turbo is on boost (same size as pipe on cold start valve)

Do you have EGR (exhaust gas recirculate)? Look for a relay next to the glow plug controller and a large valve connected to the exhaust above the turbo. If so is it stuck on?

Thanks Dave

Is this the value sits at the top of the engine, above the turbo.

As i have two of these cars, one is a 1994 and the other a 1995. The 1995 engine looks the same except for this device that comes of a pipe and sits at the top of the engine. I thought it was a dump valve or something.

The device on the 94 car, the one with the problem, a pipe comes of the manifold, and riases up and is connected to a device that is bolted to the back of the engine. it looks a bit like a flying sacuer, it had a small rubber pipe connected to the top of it, which is a blank.

Right above the turbo on both cars is a device which has an arm connected to the center of it, that i think moves in and out.

Am i looking at the right value you are talking about.

This is a link for the 1995 engine
