Heater blower packed in

Hi, the blower in our 2012 d3 gave up, and would not work at any speed... garage diagnosed fault and fitted a new resistor..the blower worked thrreafter but had poor blow to the screen, even on max speed. 3 dsys later it has packed up again. 2 questions really...why has it packed up, and when the mechanics were doing the work, would they interfere eith the heater ducting, giving rise to the poor blow to the screen.?
All advice appreciated

H Its not a resistor pack but a electronic speed controller thats fitted . It could be bad luck or a dodgy repair , did you see the old unit ? I had a P2 V70 that the blower didn't work on . i stripped it out and while fiddling it started working and continued to work for a year or so . When it packed up I bought a second hand fan unit/ motor . This comes with the control unit fixed in . it cost £20 from a breaker . it worked well for the next five years until I sold it.

The poor blow could be that the servos that mover the ducts need re programming .You will have to get the fan working first to check it works . Try moving all the controls thus moving all the servos to their max limits, do the same with the heater controls . This can reset the programming and sort a good air flow .

I believe that the speed control unit may rely on a power transistor which gets very hot. If the unit is a clone manufactured from cheap components, this transistor can be short lived. That was my experience with a fan speed controller on another make of car. It is possible to replace the blown transistor with a quality replacement for a couple of quid if you are any good with a soldering iron..

Hi I had similar problem last year, ended up having a new blower motor fitted. I tried to do this on a 2009 D5. I couldn't even get to the motor. The garage took 3 days to complete the job. They had to take the complete dash board out. A tool is needed to remove the motor from the housing. I have one if anybody needs one! Luckily they quoted a price on the hours recommended by Volvo. 6 1/2 I think.

Well folks the saga rolls on, the motor works for 2 or 3 days, unsatisfactorily, then packs up, the mechanic disconnects and reconnects the motor, and off we go again. When it packs up, the graphics on the display still work as normal. Needless to say we,re getting tired of the palaver...any suggestions welcomed 😣
