Help understanding V40 versions
Good evening all,
I'm seriously considering getting a V40 but could do with some advice. Can anyone give me a brief description of the various trim levels? One car I'm going to look at is a 1.8 SE but what does the SE mean? How do these affect insurance costs? I've heard mention of different engines and heard terms like 1.8, 1.8i, GDI etc. How can I tell which one I am looking at? Is the GDI really the one to avoid? Thanks in anticipation Ian. |
I can't answer all your questions, but I can offer the following...
I had a 2002 V4 1.8GDI Sport Lux (this was a "phase II", the last 4 years of that models production, having a slight change in the interior trim - eg, centre console) the 1.8GDI is a petrol engine, that apparently likes long motorway runs - mine spent most of its time on a 4 mile each way urban commute at 30/40mph - I had no issues. The "Sport" trim added bigger wheels, different alloys, spoilers front and rear and piano black interior trim highlights. The "Lux" added, I believe, electric/heated leather seats. Sorry, that's all I can recall, as I part chopped that car 4 years ago. Lawrence |
Thanks Lawrence, All information gratefully received.

My 2002 2.0 non turbo SE has heated leather seats, air con, electric windows front and back, manual child locks, leather steering wheel and a slightly different boot spoiler and front fogs.
my 2002 t4 S model has half leather seats which are not heated, climate control as opposed to air con, wind down rear windows but electric child locks, plus HID headlights and a black front splitter on the bumper, plus a boot spoiler with a black gloss part on it, and front fogs. Then my 1999 phase 1 2l non turbo which was just badged as a V40 with no definite trim level had air con, heated seats (non leather) plus a sunroof, but no front fogs, I think a lot of it is a bit of a lottery or factory options when the car was bought new. |

Hi Ian,
I've attached a doc I found that covers the trim levels for the model line up covering 2003-04. Hope it's ok to post this up. |

Attached another one. Looks like the line up was S, Sport, SE and then Sport Lux. Ours was a 1.9 td Sport, had leather, heated seats, A/C, headlamp washers... I think most of the stuff the Sport Lux had except for cruise control, and no fake wood trim on the inside and chrome trim on the outside.
Having said that, I recall there were also different packs that grouped options together (winter pack, family pack, etc) so it may get confusing comparing cars if these were added when new. Good luck with the hunt. We loved ours, had it 8-9 years, mostly thoroughly boring and dependable, but unfortunately it got written off last week. Sad face. |
