Why is this 'twr' carbon firbe engine cover so expensive?
Hi guys, not sure if you have seen these 'TWR engine covers' on ebay, but just curious why they go for so much money?:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-850-T5-T...item27b49c856e They are not the original thing either, its just some bloke knocking them up. Is carbon fibre really that expensive and surely the weight saving it not worth that price at all? I'm sure £150+ could buy you some somewhat 'better' go faster goodies!!! Its over my head anyway.... |

It ain't about weight saving...it's about cosmetics.
Personally I wouldn't be spending that sort of money for something I only saw when I opened the bonnet.!..LOL Neil |
Cosmetically I think they look rubbish on an oxidised old block. Maybe if it was a minter showcar then it might look ok, but surely even then it would look out of place... :)

"how much ??" / falls off chair. for a bit of CF with some holes in and embossed logos,, (fake)
id rather paint the black plastic one yellow .... |
My CF engine cover was one of the originals sold by Volvo and looks a hundred times better than that flat matt finish,

If its 'real' carbon fibre ie prepreg hat needs curing in an oven under vacuum etc then yes that is the cost of the stuff. The trouble is that most bling stuff like this is just Carbon fibre layed up wet, if you are lucky with epoxy but often with polyester. So really just fribre glass with a pretty layer of carbon cloth on the top.
