D4 or D5?

Hi

After a couple of years away with a Skoda Yeti I am looking to buy another Volvo. I previously had a V40 D4 (new) and thought that was a really impressive engine but that car was just a bit too small.

This time I was looking at either a V60 or an XC60 but I am priced out of the latter unfortunately as it would have been my preference from a space and ride height point of view.

I had a quick sit in the V60 today and it seems like a nice car but the other dilemma I have is whether to go for the D4 (again, the new one) or the D5 which of course has been a mainstay for quite some time.

The MPG on the D5 scares me a bit so I'd welcome views as to how good/bad it really is. The D5 I have seen has a lot of options on it and has been a really well looked after car - the D4 is still a nice car but without some of the toys.

Sorry if this has been done to death before but I'd welcome views/opinions and a steer on which is the best one to go for. I plan to keep it between 3 and 5 years and do an annual mileage of around 15 - 18k.

Thanks in advance.

Hi my average on my d5 v60 r design geartronic is 37/38 mpg for the weeks commute at the moment , which is 280 Miles. Round the doors at the weekend 33 mpg depends on my right foot, it’s polestared so it ain’t slow . On a steady long run 45/48 mpg at 75 ish that’s brim to brim not on the trip computer,
I didn’t buy it for economy ! Oh and it’s got 135000 Miles on so well run in .
To put it in perspective my daughter owns a 2012 1.6 d mini with 55000 Miles on her average on her trip is 48mpg for her last 2000 Miles .

Thanks very much. My driving is a mix of Motorway and around town so 40+ should be achievable if I am not killing it in the D5?

I've recently purchased a 2013 D4 Awd and around town is doing nothing like what is quoted! At best getting 29mpg!

This is part of why I am hesitating - there seem to be wildly varying figures for both.

Yep but to be honest it’s not a light car so anything circa 40mpg is ok especially running on 18 inch alloys !
All depends on your driving style and roads you use .

It's 17-inch alloys I think and I don't go mad so I am hopeful that it will not be too punishing on the pocket.

Is the D4 more economical and are there any technical/reliability reasons to choose one over the other?

Would appreciate any info.

Thanks very much.

The D4 AWD is a 5-pot, not the 'new VEA D4'.

Exactly. The D4 I had in the V40 was the VEA D4, 4 cylinders and was an absolute peach of an engine albeit relatively new at the time. There was a glut of EGR issues which Volvo was struggling to remedy if memory serves me right.

If I go for the D4 option this will be the lump I go for.

That's my question though really - are there any real disadvantages (either technically or mpg wise) to go for the VEA D4 over the 5 cylinder D5 as the D5 has a much better spec and is cheaper albeit also slightly older?
