Cooling Fan

Some advice and guidance please:

V70 2006 Petrol T5 - 230k miles:

The radiator fan has started to come on all the time (even when engine cold and just started). Car runs alright, air con works to a fashion - no material change in air con functionality for the last couple of years - this fan issue started about a month ago.

VIDA comes up with the ECM-5200 a/c pressure sensor - faulty sensor.

Code can be cleared, fan stays off for a few miles then comes back on again.

Have been searching around here - is it the pressure sensor - if so, where does it live and how easy to get to etc - part numbers?

Or is it a dodgy module in the fan / housing hence a new fan needed?

Thanks.

VIDA should give a procedure to follow for that code to confirm the fault and it should direct you to the relevant schematics. I would expect a pressure sensor to be on the dryer can near the condenser. It will likely mean removing the existing gas and shifting a rad or two to get access to the dryer.
This thread is fairly typical https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=64894
As with all sensors my first suspect would be the wiring and or plug.

On the picture that Brendan posted there is the older pre-facelift design with a separate dryer can.
Yours should have the drier looking more integrated to the side of the condenser.
I'd remove the bumper and radiator support to get better access to it.
If your system has refrigerant in it then you need to evacuate the system properly before removing the sensor.
But check the VIDA readings first, what does the A/C pressure read?

MarvinMitt Feb 8th, 2019 10:59

As to why the A/C pressure sensor would cause the fan to run, if the CCM doesn't get a normal reading from the sensor, in case the pressure is high, it runs the fan to lower the condenser temperature and eliminate the risk of probable A/C overheating.
However in this case it should also cut the compressor. Does the compressor engage and A/C work?
Compressor also doesn't engage when evaporator temperature is below 6C to avoid it freezing so not sure what's the weather like in your area.

Still trying to find my way around VIDA - where do I see what the a/c pressure is?

Diagnostics >Vehicle Communication >CCM >Parameters

Maybe I'm being numb - but I can't see anything in that bit of VIDA that mentions pressure?

I don't have Vida handy to check so try CEM or ECM Parameters..... AC pressure is definitely in one of them.

Fixed

Just as a follow up - maybe useful for anybody else who has the same problems.

Was definitely the sensor - part from Volvo was approx. £90 and then another £100 to drain the refrigerant, change sensor and refill refrigerant.

Was expecting a lot more so overall happy its fixed.
