perfect i would say with plenty of spare space at the rear for motor and a small battery with a larger battery and control gear where the engine was .. or put a Zoe electric motor in the front too ! It shouldn't be overweight with a kerb weight of around 950 kg as standard .

I did contact a company that converts Classic cars, they didn't consider the 340 a classic. They then quoted me what I consider a ridiculous figure for conversion, think it was over £20,000.

easier to DIY , buy a crashed ZOe ... You won't be saving any money spending that kind of sum !

About 42 years ago I worked for a company that made industrial electric vehicles. My job was in the R&D Department, I was given the task of increasing the reliability of the electronic traction control unit. Not easy for a guy that qualified in Mechanical Engineering, however, I did manage it, as I had an interest in electronics.

To the point, we had an Electronic engineer working on the design of electronics for a robotic vehicle. He was a good friend of mine, we decided as a home project to convert an Isetta to electric, between us we reckoned we could do it. However, the problem was neither of us had anywhere to do this conversion. It never happened.

I love the idea of a electric conversion for my 340, price wise it doesn't make sense quite yet I don't think. I was having a look round for write off Nissan leaf or Renault Zoe but those are rare and still a little expensive. Give it 5 years where the number of all electric cars will greatly increase and I'm sure there will be a tipping pint where it all makes sense. Down side is I'd need a much bigger battery than either of those cars if I was to do a trip to lemons in it, unless taking a couple of extra days to get there for charging.

There is a lot more room under a 340 than most cars as it was designed to take the bulky CVT Units , you could put a lot of battery just forward of the rear axle under the floor , then you still have the big engine bay to fill

I've been watching Youtube to get more info on electric conversions - Damien Maguire's channel is great and provides open source designs for battery controllers etc. Looks perfectly feasible to do a budget conversion on a 340 :regular_smile:

Sounds interesting, 20K is rediculous, they just don't want to do it.

I'd replace the diff with a tesla motor or similar. You want to avoid the inefficency of the 90 degree drive. Plenty of good mounting points.

Probably put batteries up front.

I was gonna do my 940, but the 300 is better with CV joints.

I'd like to see an electric 340
