D5 mpg claims
 

Hi, I'd be interested to know other peoples views/opinions on this...

Does anyone find that posters on here frequently make exaggerated mpg claims when it comes to the D5 engines, particularly the earlier 163hp ones? When I was researching prior to purchasing my 02 reg S60 D5, there were several posts on this forum suggesting that I'd get 50-60mpg out of it all day long. I took this with a massive pinch of salt although it still influenced my purchasing decision somewhat over a diesel Accord, the owners for which seemed to suggest around 40-45. Sure enough now that I have one, max I'm getting on a very long run is 45 and average is 40-43 mostly motorway. Incidentally I would never really expect anything more from a 5cyl 2.4 turbo diesel that weighs over 1600kg.

I've tended to find over the years that with diesels owners they will always exaggerate by a fair bit just how economical their diesel engines are, and this is causing somewhat skewed opinions on here. Of course the woefully inaccurate on board computer doesnt help.

Just interested really what other peoples opinions on this are. Even the chap who sold my car did the same and told me he got high 40's out of it, with the on board display showing around 50mpg (and before anyone asks, no its not my driving, as I've got the onboard computer up to 52-53 and brim to brim calculations show around 43, and with my previous petrol cars I've always got good figures)

to be honest i do not care what figure's i get unless there is a dramatic loss in mpg its a workhorse for me:thumbs_up:

I think the key thing to know, is that it is the most economincal D5. My 205bhp version is rubbish (at fuel consumption).

to be honest neither am I overly fussed about squeezing every last mpg out of my car. I just think its massively misleading for potential buyers when posters are saying they get 60mpg out of their D5s

hi, i think your fuel comsumpition is great you are useing only 60 % of a petrol engined vehicle,if i can find a good one at the right price i may change my old 940 petrol for a d5

With me its Probs coz I'm in the Unique Position of having both a T5 turbo & a D5252T (the predecessor to the D5) but quite similar

AROUND TOWN

C70 T5 Turbo ........ 19 to 24 MPG

S80 D5252T............36 to 40 MPG


MOTORWAY/LONG(ISH) JOURNEY

C70 T5 Turbo..........32 to 37 MPG

S80 D5252T............45 to 48 MPG


Very Roughly I get about 40 to 45 Miles out of £10 of Petrol in the C70 T5 Turbo.

Very Roughly I get about 90 to 95 Miles out of £10 of Diesel in the S80 D5252T

Looking at the above it can be seen the S80 is doing TWICE the Mileage (for the given amount of Fuel) that the C70 is returning ....

I used to drive a route where lots of heavy foot and stop start thru villages.

Seasonally it changed between 39.5 and 43 .... 41 ave.

I do a steady run on a major A road now for 26miles and Im getting..

50.7 ( 70 ish with blips to warp) to 53.4 (keeping to 65 mph )

Is that from the on board computer or brim to brim?

I am not interested in exaggerating mpg claims either under or over but if you read my posts on D5 mpg you could be forgiven for thinking that . I have had my V70 D5 since new in Dec 2003 and driven it 151k miles , all fuel is logged in a spread sheet ( as I have been doing with every vehicle I have owned since 1973 ) and I admit to being a complete and utter nerd when it comes to fuel consumption , its the only thing that matters as far as I am concerned ( maybe combined with load lugging ability ) , power and performance is less important to me than it used to be . I got the car for business reasons and clocked up high mileages in the first few years and the car got hammered , if there is a need to get from Manchester to London in 3 hours the mpg will not be as good as it could be but travel north and you have clear roads and less need to keep changing speed . If I could not get 60mpg plus even now with a well worn car which has had virtually nothing spent on it then I would sell it tommorow .

Fair enough I guess...I just honestly cant see how anyone can get 60mpg plus out of a 2.4l diesel in real world driving conditions regardless of how its driven. I saw one ebay advert when I was looking for my s60 with the owner claiming to have got 75mpg! Perhaps on a downward stretch of straight road simply coasting...
