Volvo S60 T5 R design

Hi everyone,

I am very new to this forum and particularly to Volvo. I have recently bought my first car which is Volvo S60 this year in Germany and it came with 235/40R19 summer tyres . I am already late to change the summer to winter wheels and when asked one Volvo dealer recommended 235/45R18 winter wheels for around 1700 euros which I found was so expensive. Again, I called another Volvo dealer where I bought this car from, and they said even if I go for 235/45R18,the software needs to be changed. They quoted 1800 from 235/40R19 winter wheels. They added if I go with 18R in winter, during each change from 18 to 19 R and vice versa the software needs to be updated. The first dealer did not mention it even.

Since this is a lot of money, I consulted a big car repairing center in our region and they said 1200 euros for winter wheels with 225/45R18 and 1400 euros for 235/45R18 winter wheels . They checked few times if this size fits this new S60 model and confirmed it. Since I am new to Volvo, I thought of getting few suggestions from you guys. Is it okay if I go with 225/45R18? Does someone have experience with this lower size wheels of 225/45R18 when downgraded from 235/40R19? Have you experienced any software or odometer/ABS issues ? Your thoughts please.

My car originally had 235/40 19. I bought a set of 18" wheels for winter and mounted 235/45 18 tyres. The dealer saying that a software change is necessary when doing such a change is nonsense. The total diameter of each combination is almost the same - 670.6mm for the former and 668.7mm for the latter. Going to other combinations would alter the accuracy of the speedo.

So it would be better to go with 235/45R18, compared to 225/45R18, right? Do you gave any suggestions for rim and tyres like which brand would be better?

Yes 235/45 18 would be the best option. I bought a set of MAK wheels, the Stockholm model. They are styled similar to Volvo alloys and take a Volvo centre cap so don't look too aftermarket. I bought them directly from MAK and they were delivered direct from the factory in Italy.

Was that 8 x 18 ET42? Which brand tyres? 98V? I found good year and Nokian WR A4 and Dunlop winters port 5 with comparatively good price in this 8 x 18.Michelin came with 7.5 x 18.does that also fit or only 8 x 18?. Thanks a lot again

I found MAK STOCKHOLM (SILBER, GRAU) 8X18 ET45 5X108 63.4. Could you please let me know if these are the specifications of the wheels you have bought especially the offset number? Did you buy the 2019 S60 T5? When I give the car model, the site says this wheels do not fit my car model.

Hi, Apologies for the delay in replying.

I bought the following wheels:

STOCKHOLM SILVER 8 X 18 ET 55. ITEM CODE F8080KSSI55GD5X

The wheels with the 55mm offset exactly matches the original Volvo wheel so this is the one to get to match the ones already on your car.

I also bought a set of centre caps from the dealer so I didn't have to keep swapping them from one set to another, although a set of MAK centre caps come with the wheels.

The tyres I bought were Dunlop Winter Sport 5D 235/45 R18 98V XL.

The tyres are OK but I had Uniroyal MS plus 66 on a previous car and thought they were better. This was on a different car though so not directly comparable.

No worries. I bought Goodyear Ultra grip. I tried a lot to get MAK in Germany, but they are very few here. The dealers are located at different regions. So they finally gave me Borbet 8 x 18 ET42, MSW, OXXO as options and I chose BORBET. They checked ABE (I do not know what is it in English) and said it fits VOLVO S60 Z. thanks a lot for ur support.

I'm still using a set of 16" wheels I bought for my previous S60 with a set of spigot rings for the smaller centre bore of these newer cars.

My car came with a set of Ixion alloys with 235/45x18. In winter I use 215/55x16. I bought the wheels and tyres from ATU for around 900€ with a set of Goodyear Ultra winter tyres when Volvo wanted 1400€+

Do you think ET42 will be a problem since both of you said ET55🤔. Volvo said 1700 euros and scared me I need software update if I go for 18 inches. Today I paid 1150 euros.
