240 headliner removal
Evening,
Still in the process of stripping off the bits/pieces getting my 93 Torslanda estete ready for respraying. One thing i am not 100% sure of is taking out the headlining to get the roof bars off.. I have taken out all the bits over my head etc and now the lining is sat there bare so to speak. It is plastic soft cloth rather than like a 940 which is solid. Do i take the sides off the lip and take it out through the rear. Once one side is off is it sort of self explanitory. Does the front get unclipped first. I remember stripping a 240 once and i remember thinking once it was out and i tore it how easy the rear unattatched. Any ideas would be much appreiciated. Mick. |
The headlining can be a little delicate but normal care should see you ok, I have removed my lining (half) starting at the rear to fit a pair of roof rails: ~
You will find a flat flexible bar sewn into the edges (folded back on itself) and once you pull the edge towards the glass- out of the “U” shaped recess/channel then down- it becomes easier as you work your way round etc. Regarding the roof bars- I can’t recall any major problems and from memory you can just flex them away quite easily. Youre a diamond. Checked a little while back and nobody had answered. I was getting a little dispondant even though i only posted last night.. What you have written makes sense, especially about only doing the rear half. I was worried about putting the whole floppy thing back up after but you have cheered me up no end. I read somewhere else that i would maybe start at a rear corner grabbing hold between thumb and forefinger and pull it back. Sounds like just what you have said. Tomorrow evening i shall have a go and keep you posted. Thanks Bob. |
I’m sure you will be ok Mick: ~ once you have removed the first portion you will get it & quite straight forward- the initial grip/pinch to pull the liner away is a little awkward but as mentioned it then becomes easier.

Hey Bob,
What was i worried about. Piece of cake. Thank you. I grabbed hold at the back and it pulled away easy enough. Like you said, once i'd seen what the edge was like it was easy enough. Everything was tight just past the rear pillar so rather than rip it i just started again half way across the rear door right where the allen key was anyway. Job done. I put it back up quickly just for now and will jif it all after the paint job is done and make a decent job of it, although if there was a new headliner out there i may go new. Anyhow, thanks Bob, youre a star. |

240 headliners are quite old fashioned - meaning that they are better quality than a modern hardboard with glued fabric affair - you know that already I used a trim shop in Isleworth (SW London - so near me; not you!) and they removed replaced and refitted my headlining for about £300. Not bad considering that they are affiliated to a Rolls Royce outlet So whether you'd get an OEM one or not I don't know, but a decent trim shop should be able to make you up a new one based on the car's existing one Good luck |

Thanks for getting back. Just found a new one in Europe ( Nordicar) for two hundred quid plus postage. If thats it then i shall enquire more. Panic here at the moment as the car goes for paint mon morning. Still heaps to go. |
