Water pump query.

Doing some service jobs on my PV544 (B18D) today and while turning the engine over to check valve gaps I happened to put some weight on the fan blade. Fan and pulley are loose although the mounting bolts are tight. With this much movement why isn't water piddling out of the pump? It's not noisy either when the motor is running.

Is there anything nasty that might catch me out when I change the pump?

maybe the fan itself

have you checked the fan its self
may be cracked, just a thought.

how about a few pictures of you 544

Fan and the pulley are moving together.

Did think i'll have to post some photo's of the car, still going through the cleaning and fettling phase at the mo.

Stuart;

I don't see the video, only the associated audio (maybe you can retry posting to YT)...but from that clunk-clunk only, it sounds like the WaPu will soon be due for replacement...if you're lucky, it will start to weep coolant first, but if you're unlucky, before it even weeps coolant, it might launch its' shaft (with pulley and fan attached) through the Rad...that's bad day!

I'd order a replacement WaPu (not terribly pricey, OE units, with cast rather than sheet-metal impellers, preferred!) to have on-hand, and keep an eye on the area, watching for leaks...when leakage starts, there's no more putting replacement off. This is no major effort, but there are a few hints...let us know when you're ready for this operation.

Cheers

Hi Ron,

Never had much success with youtube so always used photobucket in the past.

I ordered a water pump last night but don't expect to see it until the new year because of holidays. I have a trip to do New Years day and i'll keep my fingers crossed she doesn't let go on me, the thought of the fan going through my radiator isn't a pleasent one! Not loosing a drip of water at the moment.

Stuart;

I've now seen the video...I don't wish to alarm you, but that slop is what I would call "advanced"...I'd recommend replacement sooner than later!

Cheers

Is there anything to be gained from replacing the steel 4 blade fan with a plastic 5 blade fan while I'm changing the pump?

I believe that the five blade fan with offset blade was introduced to reduce fan noise. The four blade should give adequate cooling,in fact the fan is un- necessary when the car is moving, only really necessary in my opinion, when in slow traffic or stationary at lights for example.
