crankshaft shells on 850 t5 ~~ how easy is it ?
 

im after knowing how hard it is to change the bigend and little end bearings in a volvo M reg 850 t5
the engine will still be inside the car and ill be working underneath the car in a pit.
anybody got some instructions on how to change the crank shells?
and is it easy access to get to the sump?

Have a look at the Haynes manual and wait for our Volvo mechanic's views on this one - it sounds like a fairly horrendous procedure unless you have access to full tuning and diagnostic kit.

The problem with any engine-related adjustments or repair is that unless you can keep the mechanical settings absolutely stable, you may have to re-set the ECU programmes, which of course requires the computer.

sorry, I don't know if you can get the sump off with the engine still in the car, but whilst it may be possible to change the big end bearings without removing the crank, the small end bearings will require piston removal which will entail cylinder head off at the very least. To change the main bearing shells will definately require the crank out - therfore engine out. When all said and done the job will be at the very least a lot easier with the engine out of the car - it may not even be possible without it's removal from the vehicle.

ok i might just fit the Big end shells
i take it that this job can be done without engine removal?

replacing the big end shells is quite straight foward, are you sure the little ends are worn? its quite unusual these days unless of course you have had a total lubrication failure, i dont know what computer resets simon is talking about perhaps he could explain further, however if your big end bearings are worn to the extent you can hear them knocking the crank journals are likely to have been damaged requiring crankshaft removal for regrinding/replacement (are under size shells available?)which is a engine out job anyway so id say bearing the above in mind your easiest option is to remove engine/gearbox which is easy enough it you have a decent lift and work on it in comfort

I dont think you can even take the sump off without removing the engine, sorry.

as im only going to remove big end bearings now
its knocking like a bugger
and i sold it the owner is a big big fella and i just want to shut the knocking up from the bottom end

aha - it must be the season for it !!!

I have recently removed my engine to deal with a knocking noise .

I reckon you could get the sump off in the car, and perhaps even the bedplate - but you would NEVER be able to get it all clean enough to seal it up again (your punter would be back for the oil leaks - guaranteed !!!) They use anaerobic sealant betwixt block/bedplate/sump and the mating surfaces have to be CLEAN!

I have managed to totally sh&g my crank by letting the oil level get too low and thrashing it like a b&st&rd ...

Now go and sit down ...

It seems the T5 crank cannot be re-ground (its nitrided apparently though I'd appreciate this being confirmed - Don ?)

Volvo do NOT sell oversize shells (big ends or mains)

My local crank grinding company looked in their catalogues and couldn't find anything either ...

New STD mains are £177 a set and STD bigends are £117 (all + VAT of course ...)
I hope you are sitting down ... and a STD crank is £850 !!
Though they will sell you a new engine for £2860+ ...

I am still scratching my head on this one as I have been unable to find one at a breakers either ...

If you have any bright ideas (anyone!) I am all ears ...

there is a company in twickenham that advertize in my local free paper that do replacement engines and boxes, a t5 lump is £1195 inc vat,and i quote inc service parts (engine oil,oil filter and gaskets only) and are strictly based on servicable exchange units(or surcharge will apply) so i reckon unless your block has a big hole in it they will take yours. oh and it looks like it's free fitting. i've no idea of their work but the number is 02086 079060
