Discontinued part needed
 

One of the seals on my gearbox is leaking, and although it's probably preserving the exterior nicely as it's coated in oil, clearly it's no good for the gearbox itself.

However, Volvo have discontinued the part needed. I could use a pattern part, but wondered if anyone had a genuine Volvo one?

Part number 3342487, it's the offside drive shaft oil seal. It's for the MT5 (Renault) box.

I've tried various dealers and specialists, no joy so far!

Certainly volvo never made a seal, they buy them in from seal manufacture company. A good factor seal will be as good as a good factor seal in a Volvo box.

Provided the seal is from a reputable company and fits there should be no problem.

As you have the part number try putting into Google and see what results you get, sure there will be plenty of equivelent parts available.

Tried Renault but they can't search for the part without knowing the Renault code for the gearbox. As much as I like to stick to Volvo parts, not sure there's an option for this one.

Agree with Greenvanman a local bearing supplier is your best bet. A quick Google has brought up: Hooper Limited and Barrell Bearings in Huntingdon and J M Bearings in St Neots, any of these should be able to help.

You will need to remove the old seal and take in as a pattern. They will take all measurements and most likely be able to supply off the shelf or next day.

I have an old Vintage ride on mower that I keep going in a similar way. The local bearing suppliers have enabled me to keep the old girl going and keep my paddock tidy long after the official parts have dried up.

As an former parts man who matched many an oil seal a close up photograph of the seal reference numbers should suffice. No need to remove if you can gain enough access.

On Metric oil seals the size is stamped on the front face of the seal. For example 20 45 6 this indicates that the internal diameter is 20mm, outside 45mm & width 6mm.

Sometimes oil seals have different lip arrangements. From memory TC double lip SC single lip. There were some numbers that doubled up as the same I cannot remember what they were.
Very rarely there may also be a 4th number which refers to the type of seal, e.g. how it is made up, steel or rubber front face or direction the lip(s) face and so on.

I've found a picture with the numbers on for reference.

As far as it being a Volvo or Renault brand seal. It would have most likely been made by a manufacturer such as NTK or Koyo or Timken anyhow. The list is endless.

A good bearing/seal supplier will assist.

Nice one, thanks - I've just had the pattern part (ordered through Brookhouse Volvo in the end) delivered. Should be fitted by the end of the week and hopefully will resolve the oil leak!
