V50 1.8se a/c problem help please.

Hya folks,
I hope someone can help me, please. I bought a beautiful V50 1.8 se 59plate about 2 January's ago. It wasn't until the summer that I realised the a/c did not work.

Had it checked out, turns out bloke who sold it to me had removed a/c belt so that I wouldn't hear the broken a/c compressor!!
It's taken me til now to save up and buy new compressor w/clutch and receiver drier. Had them fitted 2wks ago by qualified a/c engineer, test leak and refill done etc..

But engineer tells me there is still a problem as there is no power from car to compressor?? Said will need to be put on diagnostics and it will show where problem comes from.He was able test new compressor did work.
I've now forked out approx £800 . and still no a/c especially in this hot hot weather.

Will I have to go to a volvo garage to get diagnostics done?-- no doubt at an extortionate charge just to look and even more money to put right. Or does anyone know where else I could get it checked, I live in Nuneaton, Warwickshire and am female with disabilities who is no longer able to carry out most repairs anymore. Kind regards Tracey

Hi
What exactly is happening when you press the AC button? green led lights up but nothing happens or car wont let you even switch the green one permanently?
btw - is that OEM compressor or aftermarket one?

have you had any chance to have a look at some of the things like fuses etc to see if its an obvious thing at all ?

Just at my dad's now he's having look at info someone gave. I've also booked it in with Volvo at Hinckley to put diagnostics onto car --- I tried sweet talking him, but didn't work, gona cost £60 !!!

Hi LizardOfBodom,
The compressor is a quality OE one from Germany with 3or5yrs?warrenty if fitted with new a/c receiver drier at same time by a qualified a/c technician-- which was done. Someone gave me some info as to which fuses I need to check. So my Dad and I started to look at those this evening but we didn't get far-- sudden thunderstorm stopped play lol.
But I did spot that no5 80a Element Climate unit fuse was completely missing-- but says this needs to be fitted by qualified technicians only.
Ref the green led lights of the a/c buttons inside all come on.
So I've got to start looking round for that fuse type on sale somewhere at a reasonable price including the screw nuts to hold it in. Anyone got a working one for sale? please. Kind regards Tracey

£60 is quite good ! hope you can find the fuse your missing before going to the dealer,

80a is a Hell of a fuse, if you were to install it yourself , i would strongly suggest Disconnecting the battery Before taking the cover off the fuse box to do it,

and Please mind when reconnecting the battery, stand outside the car, reach in between the steering wheel and the dash (so you are not in the line of the steering wheel airbag) and dont be Too close to the top (so the side air curtain) will miss you for the 1st turn on of the key After reconnecting the battery,
also, dont do a "me" and forget to reset the clock,,

From the tests iv done trying to solve my AC issue.

The fuse you talk about is probably it, i would image all the air/climate system runs through that.

The only wiring to the compressor is the wiring for the clutch.
I had no voltage at first so electrically i tested every thing that i could find to do with it. - which was fine other then it not getting voltage when the button was pressed.
From what i gathered while checking it out this was because the system did not have any pressure/refrigerant in it. There was a sensor forcing it to stay off, to stop it damaging its self because it was empty of gas.

As your system is gassed, i would think that the sensor is faulty in your AC line if the fuse you are getting doesn't work. Also while messing about with it if my system was over gassed, the clutch would start up then stop again as the pressure was too much.

I think the sensor is the little black box located near the windscreen side of the bonnet attached to a steel pipe at the top of the engine bay.

Im an engineer but no car mechanic, this is only what iv figured out in the afternoon i was trying to repair my car. so its my best guess.

yes ill agree the 80a main fuse being missing, does seem to be a very good start point
and as the previous owner had taken the A/c belt off when it stopped working , taking the fuse out as well would "fit"
there might be other things not set right/etc but until the fuse is in , getting the diagnostic codes read isnt a good idea, fuse in, see what happens to the a/c, and if its still not playing nice = volvo dealer to have the codes read (and translated to "its that bit" ) and go from there,,

i think the volvo part number for the fuse is 9162327 ,fuse 80a F2 + F5 ,

may help at the dealer, as you know what F2 looks like,, F5 should be the same ,

M5x20 (986201 part number) might be the bolts to hold it down,, (Again the dealer can find the Exact ones )

imho ,, trip to the dealers parts department for fuse x1 , bolts x2,,
(reason is it will 100% be the right fuse , right bolts, and fit)
possibly ask them to give you a £ on fitting the fuse ,, ?

Hi all,
Well I went to main Volvo dealer in Hinckley Warwickshire, have ordered the 80a element climate unit fuse plus bolt nuts to hold fuse in. Spoke to service dept about whether I have to disconect battery?-- he says don't have to. So asked him how much would they charge to fit it for me-- flashing my eyelids quickly. Yipee he must have been in good mood lol. He wouldn't charge me.
So fingers crossed when parts come in later today, I will go back and ask if they could fit it. Then hopefully 'Hey Presto' my a/c starts to work properly P-L-E-A-S-E
Will update later.
