What to look out for new buyer V70
 

Hi all.

I am looking at buying a 2008 (58plate) 2.4se v70 auto diesel 147k on clock FSH and I could do with some assistance.

I am very familiar with volvo petrol engines ( s40 t4) but no expierence of diesels.

So what should I check on the car when I go to look at it ??
Any particular things to look out for?

Not much, they're bloody great ! I got my 57 plate se lux before new year and I'm still absolutely made up with the bargain I got. So solid and smooth . Usual stuff with service history etc. Make sure the auto box changes smoothly and it's all good.

I love it, and the one in our version is better, but it's all relative. Had someone bemoaning that theres went at 287k miles without flushing. Well I'll be happy with that! 😂

I am thinking if I get it to get it flushed and new oil by end of year..

With that mileage, you'd want to be checking that the timing belt, aux belts & aux belt tensioner have been replaced (Look for stamps/receipts). Some sellers put 'Full service history' on the adverts, but that could just mean that its had a load of oil changes & major parts like aforementioned could have been left out. If they haven't been replaced, I'd certainly recommend getting them all changed with genuine Volvo parts for peace of mind as soon as because these parts have failed & can cause serious engine damage. If the seller confirms that these parts haven't been replaced, or you can't any supporting paperwork, then that's a good negotiating tool for a lower price. :regular_smile:

Listen for suspension noises too, particularly at the rear end because the rear sub frame bushes are a weak point & may need attention. I suppose one other thing to check is whether its a 163bhp or 185bhp (Some have a badge on the boot that say 2.4 D (163bhp) & some have a badge that say D5 (185bhp). These are the same engine, just different power outputs.

V70's are great cars. I suppose you can expect some wear & tear on a car with 147,000 miles on it though, but just check all the electrics, air con etc on the test drive.

You need to test drive it good, at least a good 20 minutes drive and tickle it some through the gears, it takes a good while to get the gearbox up to temp where it will show any issues, such as hard changes and slippage....

I had a v70 for 7 years and sold it at 157000 miles only needed the usual tyres and brakes and sailed through every MOT. Lovely big car with lots of space and comfort.
I had the timing belt and all service down by Volvo and touch wood had no issues.
