Camshaft position sensor (exhaust side)
 

My engine is running rough, and the EML is on.

My mechanic says he's read the code and its the camshaft position sensor (exhaust side)

He's told me to get a new VVT solenoid (which sits to the side of the timing belt on top of the engine), which I've fitted but it hasn't made a difference.

Is there another sensor on the exhaust side? I'm thinking he has told me to get the wrong part

I did previously get the position sensor for the outlet side (a flat metal dish like sensor that bolts in) but he told me that was the wrong one

Any guidance appreciated!

Do you know what the code is...?

The cam position sensor is on the end of the exhaust cam at the other end to the timing belt. It needs to be removed if fitting a cam locking tool.

thanks all, its a 1998 2.5 Turbo (although I think its actually a 1999 model year as its got a blue badge on the front).

I'm not sure what the code is, my mechanic didn't tell me.

Having googled, are there two different types of camshaft position sensor, depending on the model year. There is is round flat disk type sensor (which my mechanic told me was blanked off on my car) but is there a later type that has a long tube like end?

Is there a sensor on both the exhaust cam and the intake cam?

I think your mechanic should tell you what parts (part numbers) you need.
He should also tell you what code(s) he has read.

If your car has a VVT solenoid, then that narrows things down, and I think it must be a 4 valves per cylinder. I think it must have an electronic throttle module (rather than a conventional throttle cable). I think that would also fit with the blue badge.

Search for these part numbers on Skandix.de, and hopefully that will make it clearer which part you need.

By a process of elimination you should be able to work out what you need, and cross check what your mechanic tells you.

Can you upload a photo of the faulty part? Is he going to fit it or are you? Why doesn't he just get the part for you? It's not difficult to fit.

Correct, 4 cylinders and I do have the electronic throttle

I will fit it if I can, but my skills are a bit limited. I have swapped the VVT solenoid myself but it makes no difference

Having just looked in my engine bay, my camshaft sensor is this type https://www.autodoc.co.uk/valeo/16166071 seems Volvo changed the sensor type when they revised the 1999 model year (when the throttles changed from cable to electronic)

Guess I need to get the code from my mechanic, to be sure if its the VVT solenoid or the camshaft sensor.

Yes, I agree that 9202134 is probably the part you want.

I think you have 4 valves per cylinder, 5 cylinders, and electronic throttle.

Probably easier to fit than the VVT solenoid.
