noisy v70

Iv'e had my 2005 170bhp SE auto v70 for a few months now. Iv'e never found it a particularly quiet car, but being my first Volvo, I have nothing to compare it to. I have always thought that the noise was the exhaust, as even gentle acceleration produces quite a loud noise, only dissapearing when the accelerator is released. I have tried to live with it, but it really bugs me and seems to be getting worse, and last night driving my mother-in law's (quiet) Renault Clio reminded me just how noisy it is. I have checked the exhaust and it doesn't seem to be blowing anywhere or loose. What I have noticed is if I knock the car into neutral whilst driving, and then press the accelerator, the noise is not there, and in fact the exhaust noise is barely audible. But as soon as it's back in gear, the noise is back. It's driving me mad, almost to the point That I'm thinking of getting rid of it.
Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Gary

You don't say how many miles the car has covered so it's difficult to judge if wear is an isssue.

Check the engine/transmission mountings particularly the top engine mount.

This is a long shot but, what state are the tyres in, any uneven wear?

I found noise from the rear of my 2005 V70 was due to the rear tracking being miles out. It must have been like this from the factory there was no evidence of previous adjustment or damage.

This is the second Volvo I've had where the rear tracking was out from the factory, does make me wonder about their quality control.

sorry, should have given a bit more info. The car has covered 67000 miles. All 4 tyres were replaced when I bought it, 2000 miles ago. The noise is definitely engine/exhaust related. It's a resonating/throaty kind of noise not a squeak or rattle or road vibration

Hi Apollogary, i'd like to bet its the top engine mount....i replaced mine at around 70,000miles and it made a huge difference. Do a search on here for "top engine mount" and you'll see that its and easy job to replace yourself. The mount itself is often available on Ebay and around 40 quid from the dealers. Don't be tempted to use the uprated poly bush thats available as these, although lasting longer, are fairly noisey.

Good luck

Simon

Thanks for the advice. Iv'e got a mounting on order from Volvo. I'll give it a try. Will let you know if it cures the problem.

Many thanks Simon.
Changed that top mount, and it's much quiter now. Also seems a lot smoother.
