Carb Issues

Hi, I'm new to these forums and new to the volvo ownership life. I've recently purchased a 1967 volvo 122s "amazon" 4 dr wagon, it is my first project car and so far I have loved it but I have run into one glaring issue. I've been doing some maintenance work on the car recently and I have struggled with the carburetor rebuild. I bought the IPD rebuild kit and got started, but once I finished the project I have had a problem with the carburetor leaking. I believe it is leaking from the small valve hole on top of the bowl and I can't figure out for the life of me why. The float does not have a hole in it either. If anybody has some suggestions or could help in anyway I would be extremely greatful as I am very naive and unfamiliar with these carbs.

Thank you,
Noah

sounds like the float chamber is overfilling . Is the float set at the right angle and is the needle valve working properly ?

Noah;

Congrats on your ownership and welcome to this forum!

...and by tackling the carbs (I presume SUs) as one of you first projects on the car, you've jumped right into the deep end of the pool (watch out for K. Moon's or J. Clarson's Rolls!!)! The SU carbs are generally great, but they are susceptible to this very thing, especially after possibly/probably disturbing lines and components (and associated gum and contaminants thereon) which can result in Bowlvalve not reliably closing and overflow of fuel...no fun!!...clearly, this needs to be sorted BEFORE taking the car out for a drive!

I suggest you familiarize yourself with the carbs here: https://www.sw-em.com/SU%20Carb%20Service.htm
...and also, https://www.sw-em.com/SU%20Carb%20Se...and_Bowlvalves

...and as a new vintage Volvo owner, I expect you may soon notice other minor issues which make themselves known after 50+ years, to at least some extent, (like glowing AMP Indicator, sagging Seats and Bootlid), I invite you to peruse other tech articles here: https://www.sw-em.com/techarticles.htm

...and I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with major issues, like the finer points of Pulling rear Brakedrums (BEFORE attempting this with unapproved tools and techniques!), and if not already in-place, to install an Ign Key saving Start Switch!

Cheers from Connecticut!

I assume you have SU H4 or SU HIF 4 carbs on your car.

Google is your friend

The MGA used SU H4 carbs and the MGB used the later SU HIF 4 carbs. There is a ton on information on the carbs on the MGAExpderience and MGBExperience sites. The MG carbs used a different float bowl lid, but the essentials are the same.

Also, check out the MGAGuru.com website.

Moss Motors (U.S) has some clear and simple videos on the carbs, as does John Twist of University Motors.

Could possibly be that your float bowl has a leak. Shake it and you shouldn't hear anything.

These will be HS6. HS4 only on B16 and that was never fitted to any Amazon Wagon/Estate.
