Urgent help please - oils
 

Hi.
Please can someone help.
Had a warning message, transmission requires service..
The D from the gesr selector went to a - and stayed like that. I could drive but big delays as I pulled away...

Thinking first - oil level in gearbox?

1) what is the checking procedure, I believe I have a dip stick.

2) what oil do I use? Does it have to be volvo?

Oil spec is called jws 3309, Toyota garages stock a compatible one as of course do Volvo.
If yours is five speed it has a gearbox dipstick which "I think" has to be checked engine running.

Do you work on cars at all? For example: Did beat106's post mean anything to you?

It's hard to give advice without knowing.

The 5 speed has a dipstick but it's down low. On petrols it's hidden by a hose but you can EASILY do it by feel. Don't wear your finest tuxedo as you have to get your arm down to it.

Check fluid and top off if low. Be prepared to perform AT LEAST one drain & fill. This will get you a look at the color and help you decide if it's time to change the fluid.

You may have results rowing the gear range selector back and forth 20 times in an attempt to clean the contacts in PNP switch.

yes, the oil is JWS3309 and keep this number for reference

not all JWS3309 are the same, and the one needed for Volvo box is made by Mobil in USA (Toyota uses same oil, as a matter of fact the very gearbox of Volvo is made by one of Toyotas "daughter companies"- Aisin-Werner. Toyota has own name for their oil (D4? correct me if i`m wrong on this one)OWN CORRECTION: Toyota T-IV/END CORRECTION but essentially its still mobil JWS3309, still mage in USA.

for any proper sump dump you will need 12 litres of it.
go to volvo- youre looking at GBP 350+
Toyota- 5ltrs for some 50-60 quid
i went to amazon.com (mind:not amazon.co.uk) and found box 12x1quart in Annapolis, for 40 Dollars (!!!!) shipping was another 50 quit, but still cheaper than anything else.

procedure for checking level is complicated:
yes, on running engine
and on HOT gerbox- after at least 30-40 minutes of decent work or over an hour idling with stick in "D"..

when doing sump dumps i`ve found it easiest to use measuring jug, (2 of, actually, 5ltr capacity each) and simply put in EXACTLY same amount of oil as i took out.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!

DONT DONT DONT TOUCH that big nut at the top of gearbox, yes, the one that looks exactly as filling port. it is not. it is 3rd gear assembly. unscrew it and whole box needs to be opened for repairs.

"P" is where you want to end up after slowly notching your selector lever through the entire range twice. P down to L the back up to P stopping at each detent for one full second.

Then, when you're finally back at P get out and measure the level within 20 seconds....with the engine running.

Operating temperature oil and level ground.

A single sump dump (aka drain & fill) empties approximately 3.5 litres of fluid.
Disconnecting a cooling line and pumping out old fluid whilst adding new takes anywhere from 10 to 16 quarts.

Again, are you doing any of this yourself? Are you still at the gas station?

Me: lots of mechanical experience in vehicles but never gearbox internals, only ever remove and refit after others do the work on them... just not been brave enough...

I checked the oil and it was (diesel version) exactly in the middle of the range.

Gave it 10 minutes and the kept the warning in the error box but behaved normally.

Took it to a very helpful independent volvo garage at my destination the next morning who gave it a full dice/vida check and oil dip stick check..
The outcome:
ECM-5310 Communication error with TCM
Most likely:
Poor Quality tranmission fluid.

So looks like a trip to the gearbox centre for a full oil swap...

They said they suck out of the filler hole... not a sump plug??? Bit different...
