XC60 Automatic gearbox problems when towing?

How good and reliable are Volvo automatic gearboxes?

Good reports and bad reports welcome?

Have towed a caravan with XC90 D5 Geartronic for 3 1/2 years and XC60 D5 Geartronic for the last year, never had any problems or concerns.

I have towed thousands of miles in all sorts of terrain
with a variety of Volvos, all automatics. Have never
felt that gearbox under extreme pressure. Only down
side is that they tend to be thirsty although my current
XC90 D5 returns between 31 and 35 MPG when towing.

I have towed a caravan all over Europe in the last 6 years with my XC70 Geartronic and have never felt that it has been under any strain, even when we have been crossing the Alps in 35deg. heat.
Fuel consumption can be heavy at lower speeds when the torque converter is slipping, but it is not unreasonable once it locks up at about 55 mpg

xc90 D5 uses Aisian warner (toyota built) gearbox which I understand is extremely strong unlike the early t6 models which used the GM gearbox which was rubbish. Would be worth finding out if xc60 uses same gearbox as xc90 D5.

Xc60 geartronic

I have just purchased a 2014 XC60 D4 AWD geartronic at 66,000miles with 5 services. (3 Volvo & 2 ind).Towiing my 1600kg c/van on the M18 ( ie flat road) the transmission went into limp home mode, showing “Transmission service required”.The Volvo dealer is replacing the TCM module under warranty.I am not convinced this will cure the fault but keeping fingers crossed as I am not in a position to change the car so soon after purchase

Is it the Volvo selekt warranty? If so I am sure that they will sort it out.

I ended up with a new gearbox just after I bought my XC90. My experience with the dealer was very good.

That’s not good and I’m personally sceptical that a new TCM is the fix.... but you should be reassured that to get authorisation to do that change from Volvo or the warranty company a thorough diagnosis will have been made... fingers crossed.

Check the schedule or get the dealer too for gearbox fluid replacement and recalibration when used for towing and heavy usage conditions.....
