K&N Air Filter Elements

I've been told that K&N don't make an element for my S40 T4 1998, but I've found that they do make one for the 1999 model. Are the elements different between these two years ?

Regards,

John

Have a look on my website www.Kalmar-Union.com

I do keep a replacement panel filter in stock for your car plus some other stuff.

Don

In simple terms please, what difference would the change of air filter - which is probably something I could cope with doing - make to my 99 V40 T4 Auto?

Does a K & N have the same "life" of the normal fitment and will the ECU thing cope ok?

Thanks

Mike

Mike,

jumping in, it will make only a very small difference, if any at all. An aftermarket filter may make a little more intake noise, and allow you to hear the turbo whine a little more but it will not give any real BHP gains -- 1 or 2 at the very most.

Cheers, Craig

RE: K&N Air Filter Elements & Induction Kit

Which brings me to the K&N Induction Kit. I don't like kits I need to drill holes for and I don't like platic hoses being tied to my spoilers, but I'm seriously considering this.

You're right with the element replacement, it will improve airflow slightly, but everything is amplified when you're talking about a turbo charger. The extra in flow will increase performance, how much is anyones guess, uless someone's calibrated it ?!?

The airflow intake of the induction kit for the S/V40 T4 should be greater because air is being forced into the filter down a pipe underneath the front spoiler to an exit 10cm (or thereabouts) from the "cone" airfilter supplied. This replaces the box completely.

Instructions can be found at http://www.knfilters.com/57i/57-0259 2054-296.pdf

New air filter, increase the boost pressure, fill up with Optimax and off I go. :-)

RE: K&N Air Filter Elements & Induction Kit

There are a lot of opinions about cone vs. drop in filters, but the 'general' thinking seems to be along the lines of..

Unless you have a proper ram air intake, which none of the common 'cone kits' have, and my this I mean having the cone totally shielded from engine heat, by carbon fibre or plastic or something else that won't let much heat through, you may gain a little throttle response but you won't gain any significant BHP, you may even loose some.

This has been dyno tested.

Also, a shielded intake with a cold air feed sounds remarkably like.......uhh the stock intake system!! These cars do have a good system as standard which with a high flow panel filter is good for a 400bhp engine..

But if you are waiting for the 3yr recommended volvo interval to change your air filter it is most likely absolutely filthy and you will notice an increase whichever you use.

And if you drive all motorway then maybe a cone will be better because of the high airflow.

After trying a few different kits I opted for horn relocation, removing the front air shield (designed for snow anyway) and a drop in K&N filter.

BUT do let us know how you get on either way!!!
