V40 dash swiches not lit up

Hi all.I have a year 2000 V40 1.6 and noticed that the round switch that controls where the heat from fan blows and the headlight switch that turns the lights on dont illuminate when lights are on.neither does the heated rear window switch but it lights up orange when on.Should these illuminate. Thanks Alan.

Hello, yes there should indeed be illumination behind both of these areas, from memory there are three in the dash panel where the heater controls are and three in the headlight switch panel, and although the fitment style is the same the bulbs themselves do differ, as the ones in the heater control panel are a longer bulb, the cost of such bulbs will make you cry, as they are about 6 quid from Volvo, each, and so far as I know there's no alternative, the correct ones only come from Volvo.

These are the ones that go in the dash panel.

The headlight switch ones aren't Volvo only, and for that reason are thankfully a little cheaper, just make sure you retain the blue rubber caps as those affect the colour, these ones will physically fit in place of the ones in the heater control panel, but they're shorter, and so light output is affected.

These are the headlight ones.

A common route to go down is LEDs, as t4.2 neo wedge units are a fraction of the cost and you can just buy 10 of whichever colour you want for around a fiver, I've got blue in mine, just make sure you get the ones with the plastic base if you go LED as capless ones aren't the right ones.

I also went the whole hog and changed the ones in the instrument cluster itself as well so everything's blue, the dash light ones are t5 capless bulbs, so you can buy whatever t5 ones you want and reuse the bases that are already in the car.

Do the rest of the dash lights illuminate ?
If not there should be a dimmer switch somewhere. You may have knocked it inadvertently.

Neither of those bulbs were the same as mine.in the heater control panel were 2 bulbs with a brown carrier you could twist out with your thumb and finger and the headlight switch bulb is a long grey holder you get out with screwdriver but not quite the same as the one you point out in your post.Thankyou Alan

Ahh, my apologies Alan, I went from what I read in this thread, but now I read it properly that thread appears to pertain to the phase 2 cars which are 2001 onwards.

I believe they are micro LEDs soldered on to a PCB but I stand to be corrected on that one, it is possible to change them if you are prepared to do some soldering
