Possible purchase
 

Currently running a 1997 S90, I'm thinking that my new job, which starts later this year, is going to need something a bit less thirsty, and a perhaps a little more modern.

I'm taken by the idea of a second-generation S80 - there are a number on Autotrader at under £5k for something with around 100,000 to 120,000 miles up.

I like the look of the S80, and it would of course be a diesel, but that's where it starts to get complicated! Should I be focussing on my search on a D2, and D3, a D4, a D5, a 2.0D or a 2.4D? Or does it not really matter?

I'd be looking for a car with an automatic gearbox.

Do these cars have the longevity and mileage capability of Volvos of old?

Age-wise, is there any particular advantage to the later cars (with the satin-steel steering wheels etc)?

I'd go for a D5 if you can. Very strong engines capable of mega miles if well cared for.

If ULEZ is not a concern then any 2.0 or 2.4 5-cylinder Volvo diesel might be a candidate for you, with the ultimate choice being based upon the kind of performance that you require.

For me personally, the best balance in most respects would be a 161BHP/163BHP D3 or a 163bhp D4. They both have plenty of power and are probably a little smoother and quieter than the D5.

Even the later 136bhp D3 is adequate for most purposes.

Since you want an automatic, it might be best to avoid the non-Volvo D2 and 2.0D engines. Both are relatively underpowered and both use the much less reliable Ford Powershift twin clutch autobox.

Trim-wise, SE Lux is a better trim level than ES or SE by far as it brings more goodies with it.

If you can get an S80 with heated seats as well then you'll be onto a winner.

Executive trim is the ultimate, but it will probably come at a premium.

Avoid any of the Ford engine cars, especially with the powershift transmission (if they haven’t been serviced correctly they are a risk).

If economy is a priority then one of the 2 litre versions of the Volvo 5 cylinder engine (d3, d4) or for a spirited drive, the ubiquitous D5.

Look for se lux spec cars with xenon headlights.

EDIT: just what the chap above said…..

Avoid non-Volvo engines.
Avoid 4 cylinder engines.

ULEZ is definitely not an issue here in rural North Yorkshire, although the new commute will take me through the badlands of Wakefield, so that is worth checking out for sure.

Economy is important yes, but it's longevity and reliability which count too, something that the local independent specialist (the excellent Dyrdals of York) can comfortably cope with.

I'm beginning to think that the D3 or D5 163bhp engine is the one to look out for.

And the Powershift gearbox is best avoided I understand, as it's essentially the same as the Ford version of the same name, with a reputation for trouble.

This brings me to an intriguing question, (for me anyway).....
Think Volvo, and what comes to mind? ........well to most folks its a 'wagon' or estate car, they are supreemly versatile and practical, of course they are.
So why would someone wish to buy one of these, minus the very useful bit, I mean why would you buy a saloon version, they are the same size as the 'wagon' , but less useful.
Same with the 240/245, why buy a saloon? It's a bit like....''how did we ever manage before the hatchback'?
Is it just because some folks just like saloons, well, they must do, because Volvo made them and sold them, but to me, it makes no sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a dig at anyone, I really find it intriguing.

The saloon offers better rear legroom and, as High Peak Autos found, some S80s are extremely well-equipped. Massage anyone?
