dip stick queery

is there supposed to be a hole in the top of the dip stick tube about an 1" down ? v70 2.4

Is that a hole through the wall of the tube or just a change in internal diameter?
Either way it sounds odd. Pic?

The red plastic end bit is prone to breaking off the metal part, if you suspect cracks replace quickly before it happens

Especially as it's parked right in the middle of the main exit route for the alternator.

If you do replace the dip stick and or tube BE AWARE when I bought an OEM replacement dipstick it different max/min markings and cross hatching from the the original part even though the part numbers on them were the same - the max level of the older version (2001) equates to half-way up the cross hatching (i.e. half way between max and min) on the replacement.

Make sure you compare the length from the plastic rim stop at the top of the dispstick to the max/min and cross hatch markings; if you fill the oil to the maximum on the newer version it would actually be overfilled by at least 0.5L , apparently too much oil in the sump can then cause problems with the crankcase oil seal.
