Nivomat Shocks:~

Nivomat shock absorbers:~ I’ve been offered a pair of these taken from a 240 GLT, they are in descent condition i.e. strong returns & no rust on the chromed shafts- the gaiters will need to be replaced but otherwise the overall condition is good.
Would there be any advantage in fitting these to my 240 GL (I do not do any towing)
Any advice please.
Thanks Bob.

They will require matching springs I think. Surprisingly Nivomats work with softer springs than the standard set up uses. I'm basing that on the 92 SE Estate I had which came with normal shocks. These had been fitted due to one of the Nivo's having a leak. Standard shocks gave a softer rear. I replaced the shocks with the correct Nivos which returned the ride to the normal slightly hard back end when not loaded with much.
You don't say saloon or estate but I think the Nivos are probably best on the Estate where the self-leveling is most needed. I didn't know if they were fitted to saloons.
For an Estate, if the price is right and you fit them with the matching springs I think you will like the combo if the shocks are working correctly.

Thanks for the reply: ~ the car is a 1988 240 estate GL.
The springs I have are probably originals in good condition and I also have a spare set from a GLT- They look exactly the same though. I may just try the new shocks with the same before making any further changes i.e. to softer springs.
The Novamats are free so nothing to lose other than refurbishing with new gaiters & painting etc. (they can be sold on if I find they don’t suit)
Many Thanks Bob.

The ideal of course would be to fit Nivomat springs to match the dampers, however[going on the self levelling as fitted on my Omega]you can use standard springs with the Nivomats what you cannot do is use Nivomat springs with standard dampers.
