V40 D2 engine - what is it?

My V60 D5 needed a service so it's in the garage while I have their V40 D2 courtesy car.

It took a fair few miles to get used to it, as I was driving it like I drive mine, which is a seriously quick car to be fair. Leaving it in second and putting the foot down is not an option. However, now I am used to it, I did really like the 62 average MPG figure I got out of a 400 mile old car and it did move when I knew how to drive it (!).

The reason I bought a D5 is that I wanted a beast that would give me 45 - 50mpg, which it easily does. I had also heard that the D2 was a Peugeot engine so I didn't want it. This D2 has really turned my head though - I reckon I could easily get 75mpg+.

What are the origins of this engine?

It is a PSA (Citroen/Peugeot) derived unit 1.6D 115hp

Cool, thanks; much appreciated. I'll keep my D5 then and keep zooming!

Well, if that is the same engine fitted to the V70 D2 (115bhp) I had on a recent trip to Sweden, I am well impressed....it did 56mpg in that and it was an auto!!

New D4 engine is the way forward.... 181BHP with CO2 of 99g/km (manual) and 109g/km (8-Speed Auto), 400Nm torque, 0-60 in 7.2 and quoted combined fuel economy of 74mpg/67mpg (manual/auto)... so should be grins in all departments!

Although there is a new D5 due soon as well which will be 230bhp and probably equally as impressive co2's and fuel economy figures which should hopefully be a sub 6 second to 60 car.... we'll see!

EDIT: Just realised that you were talking about engines available in V40, which will be different to the above, but even so worth putting my oar in with the info on the above engines ;)

If you can get that out of engine will the other motorists on the motorway not get annoyed when you don't get over 30mph? I have this engine in my V60 and the best I have ever managed was 58mpg, the car had no other passengers, no luggage and I spent most of the journey in road works so I was travelling at 50mph for mile after mile. In the real world........average is 50-52 on motorway trips and 48-50mpg on day to day driving. I do not drive aggressively.

The V40 is a small and lighter car so you will see an improvement on my figures but 75mpg is still likely to be a fantasy.

In my experience, 18 months now, the engine is flat in 1st and 2nd but picks up after that. Hills tend to have an impact if the car is full but are fine if the car is emptyish. It sits on motorways very easily and cruises quietly at 70mph.

It is good engine, if a little soulless, worthy but not exciting.

i am a big believer in ...

you are better having a big engine ticking over instead of a little engine pulling it's guts out

My dad drives coaches for a living up and down to spain. They have various coaches with all different power ratings.

The lower powered ones cope well until they have a long climb fully laden. They lose too much momentum and then need to be strangled. The fuel economy is worse as they do more work etc.

same principal with trucks....you buy for purpose.

Thats my ten penneth

Sprout99 - I think you have hit the nail on the head here. Recent reviews of the Honda CRV 1.6d have said your exact comments. Any proposed mpg savings are ruined as you are having to work the engine so hard. In addition will the engine that has to work harder, as the 1.6d inevitably has to, last as long as the one that manages with less fuss? Surely not.

In the V60 section there is a spread of owners who have the D2, D3 and D4 engines. The mpg difference between us all is minimal but I think I know who is travelling in more comfort and style.

Yeah, can't agree more.

I had the same 1.6 diesel before in the V50, similar weight to V40, its good enough but nothing special about the performance.

It's been known by dealers as a disposable engine, when I tried to part ex mine at 132k the dealer was reluctant to take it for px.

I did achieve nearly 70mpg once on M1 with road works and very slow traffic (not with trip computer but actual calculations). but if I had to run it at 70mph, I would be in 2500rpm+ so the mpg drops to about 55.

That said it's fine on a motorway and I found the power is quite impressive for a 1.6 diesel, compared to the 1.6 petrol I had before which is absolutely gutless.

I now have a D3 (5 cyl 148 bhp) which runs much better than the 1.6D by PSA, as I will never go back to D2 / 1.6D again.

Only reason is that for a little bit extra on fuel I get much better performance compared to the 1.6D by PSA, and I get a 5 cyl engine which could potentially be more reliable.

V40 D2 engine - what is it?

Problem, as always, is where the torque is on these engines and how many revs are needed to get the advertised bhp!
My previous 04 s60 d5 was a lovely engine. Plenty of torque, no excessive gear changing etc. My present V40 D2 may have sufficient bhp but has to be worked hard leading to a somewhat less relaxing drive.
Will the new D5 be a 5 cylinder again or just another Volvo confusion with names?
