Advice please on D4 engine

Hi all,

I currently lease a (65) XC60 SE Lux-Nav D4 Geartronic (8 speed).
I have had no problems wth the car in the 3 years that I have leased it and I'm looking at buying the car in a few months time when lease ends.

I am looking for some advice/opinions on the reliability and longevity of these D4 engines from current or previous owners before committing to buying.

I have heard of a few rumours that the engines made around this production year had some serious issues but not sure how true this is?

Many Thanks in advance,
Alex.

One of the biggest threads, if not the biggest(?) on the xc60 forum relates to the EGR valve on this engine
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=221555

Having said that, our xc70 D4 fwd, built may 2015, has had no issues whatsoever over a total of 90k miles - we bought it a year ago with 75k on the clock.
It has not had the so called 'fix' done to it - i.e. It still has a 'T-piece' in the top hose.
I just try my hardest to persuade the 'other half' that she should take out my old, pre DPF Doblo, rather than the Volvo, if the journey is less than 5 miles, or so.

As well as the EGR valve, which I was lucky with in having the last fix carried out on my 2014 D4 (no repeat problem in the last 18 months), I am now suffering oil seal problems.

The engine top seal was replaced last August at 46,000 miles, my Volvo dealer having spotted the leak and cleared its replacement under warranty. Exactly a year and 10,000 miles later - now out of warranty - the "side" seals have gone on it, requiring a further strip down and a second replacement also of the top seal. Volvo are making a 40% "goodwill" contribution, but my company will still be picking up a bill of well over £400.

I have written to Volvo UK expressing some dismay at having to replace main oil seals at each annual service, this is proving to be a very expensive car to run, as it is our own business there is little consolation in the fact that it isn't actually coming out of my pocket!

Like you, I really like the XC60, in other ways it has been - and still is - a great car, but, from choice, I would not now run one that is not covered by a manufacturer backed guarantee. I feel that these cars have been built down to a price in areas that you cannot see - which makes rectification all the more expensive.

That implies that a huge quantity of these engines are having oil leak problems which isn't the case at all , you have been unlucky with some abnormality there , maybe they changed the wrong seal who knows , These are a typic volvo engine and still based on the cylinder block from the old S/V40 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines ..

D4 engine

Hi,
Not sure if this will be relevant to your question but I have a 2014 S60 D4 R-design which now has 130,000 miles on the clock and I have had no problems whatsoever with the car. Still has original EGR valve. DPF has been trouble free. Car is serviced regularly and does mostly motorway miles.

Regards
Andy

so really you could do with the light coming on to get the egr cooler update kit fitted …!

I assumed that the original EGR valves/associated cooler/software would be replaced at service time whether the MIL was on or not.

No it doesn't work like that as some cars like yours have no problems , you have to wait until the engine light comes on and a certain fault code is present .
